PC remote control recommendations
Posted by: fatcat on 31 January 2010
I intend using a PC base unit as a music streammer, with graphics through my TV.
Remote control recommendations would be appreciated. I intend paying music stored on the hard drive, although if possible a wireless connection to internet radio may be useful.

I use a logitech dinovo mini, which is a tiny full keyboard with mouse pad, works a treat for me.
Otherwise, depending on your streaming software an ipod touch can be used (itunes, foobar etc), I also have this setup but 95% of the time still use tv and dinovo

You can also use a Windows Media Centre certified remote control - a bit like your standard hifi remote. Uses a remote IR receiver connected to the PC via USB.
We use one at our shop to run iTunes on a PC based music listening station for our Naim Label music.
Customers find it intuitive to use and it allows control of a lot more functions of the PC than using the remote control features of iTunes with an iTouch.

XBMC for the software coupled with an harmony remote.

Logitech just launched a free iPhone/iPod Touch app today which works as a wireless mouse for a PC - might work rather well for you.

Fatcat,
It would help a lot if you could elaborate on what you play to use for a player. Also if you already have something you think might be able to be configured as a remote, e.g. Logitech product, iPhone/Touch/Pad, etc.
Lastly, if your PC is in another room, a wifi remote is a must, unless your streamer has an IR-remote (like a Squeezebox or similar).

Thanks to everybody for the advice. I will probably go for the mini keyboard or IR remote. Anything more complicated than plug and play is not a good idea.
The PC will be located within a few meters of a DAC. Connection will be via a USB to S/PDIF converter and Coaxial cable.

fatcat,
I use the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and MagicMouse with my Logitech Bluetooth USB dongle (it came with another keyboard that I destroyed with beer).
It isn't supposed to work on a windows PC but does very well.
Just buy whatever you get from a store with a good 30 day return policy, a la Best Buy. If it doesn't work you can simply return it.
For general use I cannot say enough about the keyboard. Although it is not the best for typing manifestos.
