Naim Aromatic

Posted by: John on 19 January 2004

Does anyone out there use the Aromatic? How does it mount to an LP12? Does it compromise performance? Is it worth it? I'm comfortable using my finger to lift the arm but my wife is intimidated. Where can I find some pictures of one mounted it would be nice to see how it mounts to the TT.

Thanks

John:

You must've seen the two Aromatics for sale on Audiogon.

There are varying opinions on this but after looking at the way it works and looking at the way it hooks up to the LP12 I took mine back off.

I never really had it on long enough to get a good listen but its gotta have an effect on the LP12 bounce. Anything that does this can't be good.

It's cheap enough to try out though.

Arthur & company-

It has been some time since I have seen one in use, but I do recall that at the time of the introduction it was claimed that it did not effect the bounce on a Linn, and given the fact that it had so little contact with the armboard, it seemed to meet that criteria. The problem with them, as I recall it, was that the tension spring would uncoil. I believe that an American Naim dealer worked out a fix for that problem, so you might call Naim USA in Chicago if you are curious.

Myself, I lift my arm by hand, but I can certainly see the appeal of lift mechanism.

Good luck.

Can someone remind me - the Aromatic doesn't auto lift the arm at the end of the side, does it? That's more of interest than the initial cueing of the LP, to be honest....

It does not auto-lift the arm at the end of the LP.
Here is an image collected somewhere on the net.

they never fixed mine despite trying two times. Richard at the factory told me it was not one of Naim's proudest moments. I wish it could be fixed as there are times after a couple of drinks when a steadier hand would be welcome with a Troika on board...

Thanks everyone. I did a forum search and it appears to be one of Naims worst products. I like the idea of the lifter but wouldn't consider it if it compromises performance.

I can't let that one pass by. Hogwash. There is little if any impact on the sound unless it's badly fitted.
