Who is Mick Parry?

Posted by: silklee on 11 October 2002

I am relatively new to the forum but one name that keeps appearing is that of Mr Mick Parry?

Just very curious as to who is he? A dealer?Someone related to the Naim Audio? Someone recognised as the 'guru' of Naim? A designer of a certain naim product?

Why are there so many posts that are directed to him? Would someone care to enlighten?

Silklee--

Forgive me if I do not totally explain, but I will try.

Mick is what I would describe as a upper middle class professional. I understand he works at the UK Postal Service as a mid to high level Purchasing Manager. He is, as far as I can tell, very good at it.

Regarding the forum, Mick is firmly convinced of the Naim value proposition and is not shy about voicing his opinions, which are often firmly, but clearly, stated. Other people on the forum appear to enjoy "tweaking" or baiting Mick; leading both to some of the more fiery exchanges on the forum as well as some of the more entertaining ones. I think it also fair to say that some people believe Mick to be something of a old line conservative and something of a snob to boot.

Personally I believe the forum has been enriched by Mick and the discourse he has participated in. If he ever ventures to Colorado I would be pleased to invite him to my home, although that would be true of most participants on the forum.

I hope this helps somewhat, and apologies to Mick if I have stated any factual matters incorrectly.

Best Regards,

Bob Edwards

Simple

It's funny you should ask - and ask this about Mr Parry, as he's one of the most candid and inexorable members in the forum. To sum it all up, if you're looking at a post that starts with "Chaps" (or "simple"), features locutions such as "Mr Toy", "pinko" (usually applied to the likes of Matthew Robinson) or "lowering the tone," (applied to anyone who doesn't own a CDSII) chances are you're looking at Mick Parry, postmaster special of Swindon, who wants the body of a greek god, but wouldn't mind a little bit of discipline either, owns an extended collection of classic fountain pens and Sarah Brightman records and a bunch of shotguns over the fireplace.

Enjoy

never mind the wallpaper

Me too. Behind the cartoon Thatcherism, and the neanderthal Daily Mail world view, is a genuinely caring and lovable guy. This forum would definately be the poorer without him.

It was once pointed out to me by former a forum regular now too busy healing the sick to post much that Mick bears an uncanny resemblence to the preserved corpse of Jeremy Bentham which can be seen at Univeristy College London.

I'm not completely convinced of the resemblence myself but its fair to say that Mick enjoys a similar reputation for greatness on this forum as Bentham does amongst 18th Century intellectuals. And of course both men share an interest in publishing radical polemics on the great issues of the day and in liberal reform of the law and society (albeit one is in favour of it and one want to put a stop to it).

Have you seen "Pleasantville" ... after that MP characterization I am certain you will love it.

When I grow up I want to be like Mick Parry.

When my system grows up it wants to be like Mick Parrys

Indeed, where is Mick Parry?

I'm sure he wouldn't be too shy to respond in full to his huge legion of followers (Parrysites?) who have praised him here. wink

Excellent question, Seagull. I guess it was getting time to take this matter to another level.

I am assuming the question is why is Mick Parry so Mick Parry? Obviously there's a couple of contenders around, like Mike Lacey just confessing he'd really like to be like Mick Parry, later. However no one has such a degree of Parry density as Mick Parry does.

Jez saying Mick Parry only acts like Mick Parry is clearly impugning the the Parry record. (I mean, I'm "lovable and caring" too - people come to visit and stare at my lovability - but that does not make me a Mick Parry.)

So that's why I'm inviting you for contributions to this question, taking the various elements into consideration, e.g. the wallpaper and the shotguns, Earl's Court, Inspector Morse and Mrs. T.

Silklee,

If your that interested about MP why don´t you try to mail him personally? This shouldn´t be discussed on the Hifi Corner anyway.

Well done to all. I think the question asked has been PARRIED with great expertise, diplomacy and wisdom.

Herm

Mighty fine question. I am a new boy to the forum, and already have seen personalities of various kinds out there - Mick, liquidken, Rockingdoc, Gunnar, Stallion, the grey Germans etc etc.

I am thoroughly enjoying what I see here - there is both wit and expertise. From what I have seen of Micks' postings, I regard him as a bloke with a TOP system, a real love and enthusiasm for sound/music presented by Naim, and a wealth of knowledge and experience which he is willing and able to share. He does not ever talk down, only expresses an opinion. Nothing wrong with opinions, either, (except from that burk Erik who just rants, eh, mr sukube?) His postings have a certain gravitas and if I see he has replied, I will look at the thread. Should I ever meet him I would buy him a beer - real ale, no doubt.

I would also expect him to be a relative of John Steed.

What kind of sycophant am I? Well, what kind would you like me to be?
wink

You misrepresent me sir!
I was referring to Mr. Parry's deeper values, as distinct from their manifestestion. I mentioned his genuineness. There was no suggestion from me that his convictions are any kind of 'act' - even though they are almost the exact opposite of my own.

The correct Parry phrase is "no-brainer."

Btw, he seems to be missing in action.

Well Paul,

you know he likes a little bit of discipline...

Perhaps though he and Mrs Mick have gone native, living in a jungle village with a bunch of pygmies as subjects

The illegitimate offspring of Maggie Thatcher and Adolf Hitler perhaps? With a political view considerably further to the right than either?

Now, now, Steve. That's a little harsh. You're not a pinko, are you?

I think the Pygmy King hypothesis would go a long way towards explaining the long absence. I can see the wallpaper in the hut, and the guns. And a big pot over the fire. That Greek God body ain't coming soon.

These discussions about Mick and his safari bring to mind the very non PC Sir Henry Rawlinson and his tours on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society. Would suggest a look out for "Sir Henry at Ndidi's Kraal". I believe it is still available on CD.

"Alot of odd bods out there. Dont understand democracy. You have to beat it into them"

"Dammit. Give a workman an "opinion"? May as well give him a rifle as far as I'm concerned."

Which quote is Mick, and which Sir Henry?

Ha ha

Why oh why oh why,

do the lower classes in this country continue to make critise our great aristocracy and it's traditions ?

People say that Mick is an anachronism, that he is too expensive but conveniently ignore the amount of Tourism Mick brings to Middle England. Er, I mean Great Britain.

Could you do his job Mathew ? Could you ?
Mick often spends several minutes at his desk at The Post Office (as PLU still refer to it) before taking a well earned seven hour lunch break, yet still returning to harang hard working suppliers (it's what they deserve) and keep them in their proper place, damn them.

Mick, you bring pleasure to several people across the world. I hope you return safely from your Rhodesian trip, as I am only now getting over the loss of our Queen of Hearts.

Your humble sycophant,

Brian OReilly

Brian,

I wouldn't really want to call Mick a member of our or any Great Aristocracy. That's missing the point. Mick, on the contrary, is aspiration magnified on a very large and funny scale.
