Jo Jackson - Opinions on.

Posted by: woodface on 19 August 2005

I have recently got quite into Jo Jackson and think he is one of the great under rated UK artists. I recently bought the Volume 4 album for £2.99 - what a bargain!! Discuss?

my sister used to like him. 2.99 sounds about right in my book. :0
It's Joe btw.

Seen him a few times live and he's pretty good, though has a foul temper, and once threatened at Berlins Metropol (I was there) to break the absolute musicians 'Taboo code' and stop + maybe walk off if people didn't remain totally silent during an Accappello set Big Grin

Quite a Primadonna, innit Smile

'Something going on around here'

I don't think he wrote Ruby Tuesday either though ?

I interviewed him backstage at Bristol's Colston Hall 20-odd years ago. I'd been warned about his prickliness, and ordered to bring a copy of the newspaper I worked for. If he didn't like it, there'd be no interview. As it turned out, he was completely charming, not remotely "difficult," and the only time he betrayed a hint of irritability was when I asked a gormless question.

This forum is a wonderful thing - this thread has made me dig out 'Stepping Out' and 'Blaze Of Glory' and enjoy them all over again.

A mixture of opinions then! I think in some cases his output is so varied that he struggles to build a large following. I really like a lot of his stuff but there always seems to be a couple of duffers on each albumn though?

I'm a fan. Look Sharp is brilliant; next to that I like his "live" album, Big World.

While I like his music, his pro smoking stance (druggie rant) makes him about at the same level as Bernard Ingham IMHO.

Can never forget Bernard Ingham's wonderful cover version of "Maggie's Farm".

I've been a fan of his varied output for many years now. I recall once seeing him live at the Edinburgh Playhouse in about 1981 (??). During a lull between songs one well-lubricated member of the audience screamed "JOE, YOU ARE F*****G UUUUUGLY". Jackson quickly managed to get a narrow spotlight put on the still noisy heckler and in a hushed tone announced the next song -'This next song is called Fit and its for people who don't' Big Grin

Great gig !

I've a lot of time for Joe Jackson (I read once he's Ben Fold's musical hero too and that's no bad endorsment. Great musician and songwriter yes, but he's also written a wonderfully funny, touching and thoughtful autobiography - A Cure For Gravity.

Here's a dedicated US follower of Joe. Among many memories:

1. Blaze of Glory tour (1986?) (favorite album) where he did the whole album non-stop, as it flows on the actual album. Came on stage for Nineteen Forever in full Elvis jumpsuit and 12 inch pompadour wig.

2. Night and Day II (2003) tour (#2 favorite) with latin rhythm section, cello, viola and violin player (no guitar) and electric bass. Covered Beatles' "For No one" and Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years" in solo piano interlude. Told the audience to stop clapping cause they could not keep time well enough (being a drummer, I LOVED it that someone finally said it. Now if I could just get the f*&%ers in the next row to stop talking during the soft numbers....

3. In 2005 touring solo with Todd Rundgren in NYC central park, covered Lennon's "Girl" to great effect - with John's memorial and last home just steps away. Then dueted with Todd on Black Maria and While My Guitar Gently Weeps (with a string quartet backing.)

I have alot of respect for a man that can do as much as he does with a mediocre vocal range - and boatloads of musical talent. Dont mind his cynicism and sarcasm. We could use a bit more of that here in Bush-land.

I put some Joe Jackson tracks on a compilation I did for for my youngest brother's wedding and was amazed by the reaction I got from both new and old fans (reminiscing). Saw him live several times after the release of Look Sharp, and during the Jumping Jive Tour. Never less than brilliant live.

Joe Jackson was one of my favourites in the 80s and is still played fairly regularly in the halibut house. My favourites are I'm Your Man (the second album) and Jumpin' Jive, in which he performs (in my view) excellent renditions of some songs made popular by Louis Jordan many years ago.

Is She Really Going Out With Him? is an all time classic.

He's one of those people that I always drift back to, regularly played.
