What al*** by an artist you really like do you find wretched?

There are artists of various genres that we all really like and respect as artists/musicians/writers/arrangers, but every now and then they can really lay a bomb...which ones come to mind for you?

For me I'll start this off with:

Neil Young - Trans; possibly the worst album ever.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - Love Beach; might beat the above.

Remember it has to be an artist that you like the vast bulk of their work...as in you would buy something unheard just because they did it...only to figure out you should have bought that Britney Spears disc instead - lol! Big Grin

Wilco - everything that came after SummerTeeth, some people rave about their later work, but it does nothing for me, something got lost.

Glenn Gould doing the late Beethoven Piano Sonatas - he makes them sound like the piano score for a silent movie.

Mingus is a stunner!!

It was very much a part of her musical journey during the late seventees. If you don't like Mingus then I find it difficult to imagine you liked Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan's reckless daughter etc etc.

Pink Floyd 'The Wall' and Genesis 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. Both albums where the vocalist used the band as backing for a long narrative and lost the point of how the band interacted to make interesting music.

I know those into Water's and Gabriel's lyric will love those albums, but as someone who likes the bands for their arrangements, musicianship and tendency to explore formats other than "verse chorus (x2) middle 8, verse chorus, end" these albums are very disappointing. They are also miserable, with long sections of self pity.

I would add these are albums where the band lost it way, but came back with good music afterwards, as opposed to losing the plot as Genesis did after 'Duke'.

I like 'Mingus' but can see how it tipped too far towards jazz for some compared with the previous jazz influenced albums.

I have to politely disagree but you probably knew I would Winker - two of my very favourite albums. One thing I have never really been much into is the lyrics (and god knows what the Lamb is about). For me it is the tune and I find these two albums full of great melodies.

Well this is an easy one - several of the Beach Boys' LPs are among the greatest ever made, and some are among the worst - mainly stuff released after 1973. In fact I admire Surf's Up and Pet Sounds so much that I'm prepared to say that 15 Big Ones is my least favourite record... nearly...
