Shostakovich RLPO Petrenko

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 11 May 2010

Been traveling on the train and picked up HiFi+ for some light reading and read a Roy Gregory review of a ludicrously expensive speaker, in it he mentioned several pieces of music including the Naxos Shostakovich 11th Symphony; so I picked it up on the way home.

Now I have never listened to any of the Shostakovich symphonies, and so I have nothing to judge this interpretation against, but what a GREAT piece of music.

I have to say I spent some of the time identifying phrases that had been ripped off by sound track writers!

I've gone and bought the 5th and 9th now, the only other CD the shop had in stock.

Agreed. A great piece of music, and very exciting performances by Petrenko and the Liverpool Philharmonic.

You'll love the 5th, I'm sure Mr U, and I believe 8 has just been issued, which I haven't obtained yet, but is one of my favourite symphonies. I think Petrenko, along with other young Russian conductors such as Karabits, are really bringing some new energy to UK orchestras and performance of 20th Century composition. I believe Petrenko is recording all Shostakovich's symphonies for Naxos. Excellent recording as well, don't you think? I hope you continue to enjoy the series.

Both Mahler and Shostakovich have had their ideas stolen by film composers for a long time, although Shostakovich wrote his fair share of film music.

I like the live Rostrapovich version of the 11th with the LSO, but for the full Monty you need to dig out Mravinsky on Melodiya

It is indeed a great piece of music. If ever you get a chance to hear it live, consider going. No stereo can do full justice to the scale of the piece - it's a different experience in person.

Yes, good recording, great dynamics. Haven't got to the 5th and 9th yet but I'm confident you're right.
