n-Vi -problem
Posted by: PeterX on 23 May 2010
Hi all
I have lost the video from my n-Vi via the HDMI cable - nothing on the screen at all not even the naim logo. I have checked the video system and output parameters and all looks OK. I have also swapped HDMI cables (with the SKY HD box) and both video cables are OK.
Have now on the off chance and remembering I had an old scart cable tried that and lo and behold there is a picture (via the scart). So the video engine is working.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why there is no picture via the HDMI and what I might do about it?
Cheers

Have you tried the menus on the front of the NVi?

Yes been through the menus and checked that the System video option is in AUTO. I cannot find anything that specifically relates to the HDMI output though.
I do not understand why I can get video via the scart (which I have never previously used) and not the HDMI (which I have always used previously with no problems).

Peter,
check that the DVI port is switched on. You can switch the various outputs on or off for better performance. You will find this in the setup menu.
Also, do remember that it is imperative to never "hot" connect a screen to the DVI port on the n-Vi. Many screens float at half mains voltage and this can fry the DVI board quite easily if you try to connect while the screen is on. Always ensure that connection is made when the screen is fully switched-off. To be safe, ensure the n-Vi is likewise switched off when making the connection.

Many thanks for quick reply and suggestions.
No video connections have been broken and reconnected in recent times so I'm sure there has been no reconnections to the DVI port since we last watched a DVD.
Not understanding too much about the system I assume that the set up menu is that described in section 8.1 of the manual (Video system and Output format.
What I am seeing under the Video label are two further labels System and Format.
The System label is set to AUTO and the Format label will toggle between RGB and YPbPr only. I assume I should be able to toggle to DVI is that correct?
Am I looking in the right area to toggle outputs off and on?
Regards
Peter

I have just determined that DVI port is ON!! (I didn't realise I needed to go to the on screen set up menu).
Is there a fix or does this mean I need to return unit for repair?

Peter,
OK, thanks for that. I'm not sure where to go from here, so you may like to e-mail Naim (c/o Steve Hopkins or AV@naim) or else he may pick this thread up at some point today and advise further.

Peter - if you've not done it already, switch the n-Vi off at the rear panel switch for a minute and then switch back on. My n-Vi has 'lost' its DVI port twice in the 4 years i've had it and a full switch off sorted it out.
Hope that helps

Yes I've tried that. In fact as the n-Vi is only used a couple of times a week, if that, I usually switch it off via the rocker switch anyway.
Thanks for the info though.

Do a factory reset from front panel, see if that cures the issue. The hi-def video (YPbPr/DVI) runs via a seperate board, so it's possible if the reset doesn't work, that this board has failed (which explains why SCART/S-Video still works).
Also, what code is the unit running?
see here on how to check how to do this and if you are on latest:
http://forums.naim-audio.com/e...2929996/m/4372966617
Factory reset:
Put unit on disc input with no disc in and drawer closed.
Go to Setup Menu -> Other Settings -> System Reset -> Factory Reset
(Remember all settings will be defaulted)

Hi AV/naim
Have just carried out the factory reset and it has worked and I now have video via the DVI output! Many thanks for sorting that out for me so quickly - excellent service.
I do appear to have an out of date code (PIC c02-12 and Chrs 000.189.005.003). However I have not been aware of any synch problems so maybe I don't need the update?

I would always suggest updating to the latest version, but obviously the choice is yours at the end of the day

How do I do I update the code? Is there a disc I can obtain by post?
I have recently moved away from my old dealer but I am only 25 miles away from Naim in Salisbury.

Peter, I suggest you give Steve Hopkins a call at Naim.
