Queen

Posted by: Mike-B on 26 December 2009

I finally came to terms with the age & condition of all my old Queen LP's. So I send a note to Santa & he kindly sent me the 2x disc Greatest Hits II. Normally I hate greatest hits, but this old release is well recommended by Queenites as the best of all the material in 1 package, it is all inclusive of Freddy unlike G.H.III which is post Freddy, so what the hell, I still keep the vinyl.

Its a great pair of disc's - especially on the new CDX2 [Mucho Big Grin] But it does not have Bohemian Rhapsody - what's going on.

There is some marketing chicanery on certain Queen GH discs; I have one that is a single disc set (maroon cover) which lacks Bohemian Rhapsody...yeah, no one wants to hear that song. I also have another double disc GH collection (gold), and it has Bohemian Rhapsody, plus anything else I might want in a GH collection, but the version of Fat Bottom Girls is the truncated "45" version...so I have to keep both.

Kinda sucks that it was done that way if you ask me...

Camp nonsense! Doesn't deserved to be played, Devil's arse, and all such.

And what dreadful music they released!

Queen is a great band, and my all time favorite is "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Borehemian Rhaspberry.

Ohh dear, seems we have some grumpy ol' don't like queenies. Razz
Well for what its worth, I don't take them too seriously, but they don't deserve a total put-down, they are good for a party time background at least. Jenson likes one of their tracks, so not all bad ehh ?? Cool

There's nothing wrong with a bit of camp nonsense in one's life once in a while!

I have to say I've had a strange relationship with this band over the years! Queen were actually the first band I ever saw live in 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon at the tender age of 12 and one can't negate one's past.

I had the first 4 Queen LPs at one time in my life and then there came a time when I felt it necessary to have a serious clear-out of some of the less wise purchases of my youth. The Queen LPs were casualties of this.

Then, about 10 years ago, my sister donated all her vinyl to me which included the first 3 Queen LPs. From a sense of nostalgia, I couldn't resist playing them again and found I quite enjoyed them.

I'm always suspicious of anyone who claims that Queen are their favourite band - my gut reaction is they just shouldn't be the first band you mention in a first conversation with someone about music! But, I think I am guilty of a little bit of musical snobbery as I'm always strangely quite happy if a Queen track suddenly comes on the radio.

A strange one for me anyways.

All agreed Steve, especially about admitting they are yr favourites.
I grew up in 60's with the legends - Clapton, Hendrix, Green, Nice, Tull - so by the time Queen came along I had a pretty good ear for what I liked & could tell good from bad & the f#awful (lots o' them around) I saw Queen at a festival in 70 something and was not impressed, but I saw them again a few years later in USA and was impressed, so I guess they got the hang of it.

A side story .... when I was working in USA I got involved in riding Hogs - (another closet admission for an ex Norton)
I went to a biker weekend - hairy hells angles and all - the headline act was Elton (whoops)
They boo'd & jeered, but he told 'em to go f### themselves and then belted it out & knocked em sideways.
Queenies ain't all bad

I really like them but have rather eclectic tastes.

To get an overview of Queen, you really need both Greatest Hits I and II. Lots of great tracks on I including Bohem Raps, Killer Queen, Save Me, Another One Bites The Dust etc

Anyone compared the 2009 vinyl remasters to the originals?

Great band over their first 5 albums - after that it got less clever. Killer Queen is worth 10,000 Bo Rhaps.

Just to set the record straight, I don't like BoRap, most of their other stuff is very good.

Don't call me a queenie either. Eek Razz Smile

I never owned one of there records first time around though.
I have most if not all of there original vinyl now, Thanks to people giving them to my local charity shop in mint condition.
I used to own two albums, as I mistook them for Marx brothers film soundtracks; I gave them to my local charity shop.

Small world!

If you, or anyone else, wishes to relive the moment I just noticed a concert from this tour (presumably the Christmas Eve one which was originally televised) is being shown on BBC4 on New Year's Day at 10pm....

I was back stage at Live Aid and thought that Wembley was pretty dead - until Queen came on, an injection of adrenaline that woke up the whole event.

Brilliant.

Saw some of it last night.
It didnt seem as good as when i was there though.
The Chrismas Eve Elton John,Y B Road gig the year before was loads better.

i had all the albun of queen upto day at the races then lost interest, killer was my favourite.

then a few years ago i picked up all their records in perfect condition for £85. they recorded some good tracks.

saw them live twice, one was geldoffs bash at wembley and they stole the show.

the last few records were alittle thinner and flexible than the 70s pressings.

lots like queen and abba but wouldnt say so.

queen left us with some class music and some of it sound has fresh to day than nearly 40yrs ago

Well, my tastes have definitely changed since I was 12. The person I am now wouldn't have gone to see it back then, but I found it quite interesting for nostalgic reasons.

Like munch, I didn't originally own any Queen albums.

Although they're not my favourite band I can understand why they might be others, and jolly good luck to them! Nothing whatever to be ashamed about. A superb live act & Freddy Mercury, God rest 'im, was a wonderful entertainer with a great voice.

I can recommend Queen's Greatest Hits vol.1 on DVD. Excellent surround sound and most of their best songs.

I think because there was a lot of pomp and nonsense about Queen - humour and self mockery was always a constant theme - the "Rock" critics never took them as seriously the Floyds and Whos - not that it will have worried them.

I didn't like everything Queen did by any stretch, but some of their stuff was inspired and early on, they rocked with the best of 'em.

As for Freddie, he was a character and it's not as if we are over-endowed with those. They did some great live shows too.
