Aro/Armageddon on Rega Turntable
Posted by: Andrew Randle on 08 March 2003
It's been a while since I started a topic.
Has anyone tried fitting an Aro on a P25 or P9. Is it possible, does it fit (cutout/height), what's it like?
Also is it possible to mod a P25 or P9 to accept and Armageddon? Will the motor take it even if the power cable is modified? What's it sound like?

I had an Armageddon on a P25 for a while and it was a significant improvement. It made for deeper bass and an overall richer sound. It basicly rectified the complaints I've heard of the P25 and gives the P9 a run for your money. I wouldn't recommend an Aro though. The extra funds would be better spent on a good Lyra or Dynavector MC cart.

The question that must be answered
Andrew, why do you ask? Are you thinking of ditching your LP12?

Hold fire if you are thinking of buying another TT.
As you know, I have a restored Garrard 401 mounted in a Loricraft plinth. The weakest link is the RB300 arm.
I have therefore arranged for Loricraft to fit a brand new Aro (I don't like the idea of a second hand one) in a couple of weeks time.
I will let you know the result. According to loricraft, this combination absolutely slaughters a LP12, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. The catridge, BTW , is a Dynavector 17D2
Also I intend to buy a PSU (Loricraft reckon theirs is the best...but they would say that), can anyone think of an alternative. Naims stuff is geared towards the LP12 or so I have been
led to believe.
I would take the Rega in preference to the LP12, I think it sounds better and is a lot less finicky.
The only LP12 that i would go for is the Ninja and they are as available as chickens teeth.
Regards
Mick

Hi Steve
Don't worry, I'm not chopping and changing, I'm just interested in the effect of combining a number of turntable components that seem to have similar strengths.
Mainly asked from a perspective of curiosity, however I was pondering whether these Naim products could improve a P25.

Hi Mick,
I'm keeping the LP12, it still represents my ultimate turntable and I'm extremely happy with the configuration (Ekos/Lingo2/Klyde/Linto).
However, I've been a hi-fi nut for too long and always interested in keeping my ear to the ground and appreciating the breadth of design out there. One of these days I may take pleasure in becoming a hi-fi dealer.

chopping and changing
Andrew,
I don't see the point of messing around. Cut straight to the point and get yourself a listen to the new(ish) P9 with RB1000 arm. Having upgraded from a planar3 to P25 to the new P9,I can confirm that it really does do the business.

Dave,
I've heard the P9 in a standard configuration. It has some great qualities that reflect many of Naim's strengths. However, I am sticking with Linn.
Take this as a theoretical exercise with sound, I believe that the Rega and Naim way of doing things are highly similiar (flow, speed, detail and annunciation). Therefore I was interested in whether a Naimed-Rega was a match.

Rega'd-Linn
In a recent issue of HiFi+ [not sure which] Paul Messenger [with the help of Roy Gandy] rigged up an LP12 with an RB1000 and a P9 power supply, mostly preferring it to his regular LP12/Aro.

Mick,
I'm really looking forward the result you achieve with this combination.
I had posted a while ago a question about Aro'ing my Thorens 124 or similar experiences on Garrard, but to no reponses
So I'm very curious!
Cheers

I expect that Loricraft will fir the Aro in about 4 weeks time.
I will keep you posted on the results.
