FRAIMING THE ROOM 1.75 A.K.A., The MUSIC is BACK!!

Had the guts to put up the DBLS. WOW! Great room!
A bit live but, the ROOM TUNES took care of that.

They are about 15 inches from the wall and 2.25 inches toed in. Sounds wonderful.

Next, continue to tune the room and continue to work on the Fraim.

The A5 that you see will not be there as soon as I have the connectors soldered to the wires that are in the wall..

I have attached a pic. Hope it works.

Regards to all,

Marc Newman

The Michael Green Corner Tunes are triangles that can be seen at the wall-ceiling corners, and I see some Tuning Strips at the wall corners behind the speakers ...

Saw the Fraims at my dealer's showroom, they are indeed beautiful, low-slung racks.

Mark, having toed-in the DBLs, do you get a good center image ? Also having them out from the walls slightly, do you get some soundstage ? I know, soundstage is not important for many here, but I am curious and interested to know ...

Marc,

What are the dimensions of your room (H x W x D) ? At a guess, I would say that your speaker wall was about 14ft across, about the same as mine. I'm really keen to know what you find to be the best position on this wall for the DBLs.

Inuitively, where they are now looks to be too close to the corners and the best place would be to have them about 3ft in from the sidewalls, despite this only leaving about a 4ft gap between the DBLs.

As I say, please keep us informed - I'm intrigued to know what you find.

Very good...

I have gone through so many choices.

The advice given to me over the last monthes has helped a great deal. I have stated before that there is much more to be improved from this setup. The Fraim, wiring and possibly speaker position might change very soon.

I can report on what I have found to this point.
Upfront, I will say that all the hard work has paid off. The wait allowed much thought to go into this project.

I did have more than the usual amount of insulation put in all the walls. I insured that the floors were screwed down and not nailed. The A5 installed in the walls was put in flex tubes that were anchored and strapped to the joist. The speakers are against an outside wall. Not 2*4 but 4*6 construction was insured...

The room is 14*16..You are correct. There is no back wall. This means that there is no reflection behind me. This also has proven the speculation that the bass line would be quit powerfull.(Its ability to get to the last octive.)
Yes, it is true. The house has acted as part of the room but without reflection issues you might get from other homes. Reason: The house has interior lines that are not straight. many angles and very few places BEHIND me to act as a detour(or to capture)the music. This part sometimes confuses me but, it worked out great...

I was very concerned about the distance between the walls and the right and left edge of the speakers.

It was to be 8 inches at first(ended up at 15 inches from the sides). I walked the room for nearly 2 days to clap(standing waves) and to sit in my chair and GUESS what would be the best starting point would be.I think I might have miss told how far they are from the wall. the inside corners are are 2.25 inches from the wall. This is because the xovers will not allow anything closer. The outside(toein) is 4.25 inches on both speakers...

There is NO boom what so ever... I SWEAR!!
I was very suprised. At first use, the biggest frustration was the standing waves.Putting the volume past 10 on the 52 proved to be a torture after a few minutes. I had used ROOM TUNES (more later) in CT. and found these morsals to come in very handy...

I was able to eliminate 98/99% of the reflections that cause bouncing of the sound. Without the back wall, this was made even easier.

There is a rock solid center to the music. A wide exspanse to the sound but no real depth.
I used Quads for 18 years before I went to the DBLS. I can say that these speakers come extremely close to that midrange that I have drooled over for so long. The bass line is the most solid, tuneful, musical,I have ever experienced.

Room tunes are the brand of dampening that I chose . I would guess that there are many companies that offer the same or very simular products. I would suggest a search on the internet or you may contact PRO MUSICA in Chicago.
17738839500 ask for Ken..

I did put ROOM TUNES in the corners. I think this might have helped with the issue of the speakers coupling with the corners..

Well, its about time. we are bombing!!!

More later time to watch CNN........

Regards to all,

That's what I wanted to hear, a solid center. Now I can accept Naim speakers ... gotta save for these DBLs ...

Marc - if you're tempted to edit your last post again you might like to know that you can actually delete the previous "this message was edited by so and so @ such and such a time." lines and just leave the ONE "this message was edited by....." line.

Cool eh?

P. - I've been there.
