Tom Waits - Mule Variations

Posted by: rupert bear on 30 October 2008

There's a track on this which I've always had a thing about - 'What's he building in there?'. Great stuff. The other day, Michael Berkeley on Radio 3's Private Passions interviewed an American woman (??) who chose it as her favourite track of US Indie-type music of recent years. However, the version they played seemed longer than the one I have on the 'MV' CD - more lines at the beginning, unless I was imagining it. Any ideas?

I think the episode of Private Passions featured Michael Berkeley meeting Marcia Schofield, an NHS doctor and former keyboardist in The Fall (Poor woman) Eek .

The track played was -

Tom Waits : What’s He Building ?
Mule Variations EPITAPH 65472 – Track 8
(Waits/ASCAP)
Dur : 3’20

Programme information

Tom must be playing tricks with your ears - he's kinda like that

Diccus

ps there's also only one version on itunes.

Great record, great track. I like a lot of Tom's music but especially MV and the delightfully titled "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards". As a bonus, the CD packaging is probably the best I've seen.

I gave a copy to a friend as a Xmas gift soon after it was released and boy, was I smug. Totally nailed it. Perfect gift. Followed it up a few years later with the Radiohead "In Rainbows" box-set to cement legendary-gifter-status with said friend.
