LP Storage.
Posted by: tonym on 10 July 2008
Hi Guys.
I've been looking unsuccessfully for a good storage system for my LP collection. At the moment they mostly reside on a long wooden shelf behind one of my SL2s, and they're very inconvenient to get at there(I have a frisson of concern that if I move them it'll adversely affect the sound, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it). Plus, the joys of living in an old house means that if the wind and rain come from a certain direction water seeps in from above & they're in danger of a good soaking.
Being an old place it's difficult to find something that fits in. I don't want anything with doors, more like a big tall deep bookcase, ideally made of Oak, and solid wood not laminate.
Anyone got any suggestions on where I might obtain such a thing please? I've had a troll through the Forum & Googled without luck so far.

I don't know if there is an equivalent local to you, but around here we have
Cotswold Collection and they will make whatever you want from whatever wood you choose - my record cabinet has doors (and the Doors plus other groups inside), but it would be your choice. I have lots of furniture from them.

tony,
i had a similar situation as yours and trolled through endless websites but in the end i got a good local joiner who made a cabinet which blended in seemlessly with my existing unit which was also very reasonably priced which im very happy with. so my advice would be to seek out a joiner in your area...get him in then explain what exactly you require and he should give you a price on the spot.
hope this helps.

ikea makes several units which work, i have one. however, if you need solid wood, you're probably going to have to have it custom made. there is a woodworker in the eastern u.s. who makes reasonably-priced modular units out of nice woods, but that won't help you. perhaps there is such a shop in england.

I got a nice cube style piece from Ikea it has 25 cubes, but is made up as one whole bit. You can also get different numbers of cubes. The records fit a treat.
Available in Alberta Canada not sure about anywhere else.

Tony, LP storage is the primary reason why I cannot realistically add an LP12 for now. My son is moving out of our rather cosy flat next month (we think!) so that will allow at least a revisit to the subject!

A quick look at the ads section at the back of most musics mags (Q/Mojo etc.) will give you a handful to check out.

You Might want to try Woodstock in Mildenhall,Suffolk. They do buy in as well as bespoke in pine mainly and also oak.Mike

I did similar to scottyhammer & got something made bespoke.
Similar cost per unit of storage to Ikea, but I much prefer the look.

Thanks for all your help chaps. I suspect Scotty's suggestion might be the best option.
I thought I might make one myself, but then I remembered I'm absolute crap at woodwork.
Stuart, I think that's what JWM's got. It's pretty ideal sizewise but just too pale for our gaff.

Blimey 555, that's either an 'normous great system or your LPs have shrunk!

Glad to see you had the foresight to allow for almost infinite SHM purchases in the future!

I had the shelves made to accommodate future record buying temptation,
but I don't have any targets.
The picture is six months old, so noticeably more CDs on the rack already!

Further embarrassment; I was going to do this earlier, but can't find the camera!

Nearly Tony. Mine's the Bonde bookcase. Also available in poo colour

Each cube holds about 80 LPs with sliding room, and of course it has the advantage of being backed.

Thanks James. I think your Maple one's a rather nicer colour!

555, I'm not sure if you're interested, but Shahinian have done a small change to the feet on the module.
