LP Storage.

Posted by: tonym on 10 July 2008

Hi Guys.

I've been looking unsuccessfully for a good storage system for my LP collection. At the moment they mostly reside on a long wooden shelf behind one of my SL2s, and they're very inconvenient to get at there(I have a frisson of concern that if I move them it'll adversely affect the sound, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it). Plus, the joys of living in an old house means that if the wind and rain come from a certain direction water seeps in from above & they're in danger of a good soaking.

Being an old place it's difficult to find something that fits in. I don't want anything with doors, more like a big tall deep bookcase, ideally made of Oak, and solid wood not laminate.

Anyone got any suggestions on where I might obtain such a thing please? I've had a troll through the Forum & Googled without luck so far.

Thanks for thinking of me count.d, & I am.
What have they done?

Are those IKEA units strong enough to hold LPs if fully stacked with them?

3 years on, no problems yet!

555, they have repositioned two of the 4 feet to the centre, near the cable cutout. They feel it gives the module a more stable platform, given that it's wood and liable to warp.

Also, have you tried this:

It reduces a lot of vibration in the speaker cable.

Very kind count.d - thanks for the pics too.
That's a mint looking Hawk unit. Mine are 8 years old, but they have had the drive unit upgrade.

Your previous post got me excited,
so I spoke to John at Pear Audio as I couldn't wait for more information - so OCD! Red Face.
Anyway he also mentioned that now Shahinian are sourcing the feet from a differnt maker (part wood, part plastic IMSMC),
but neither change affects sonic performance.
A relief for me as John mentioned to change would cost "coming up for a thousand".

Very interesting idea to use foam on the speaker cable between Subwoofer & Module.
I haven't tried it, but I will now! It's always troubled me that the SC between the Subwoofer & Module tends to hang in front of the bass drive unit.
Do you have any thoughts on this?

Thanks again - John

John,

The feet on the module are a silicone compound. It looks easy to peel them off and restick them. As yours are in each of the corners, it might be worth a look to see if all four feet are touching the subwoofer perfectly even and if not, you could copy the new Shahinian position.

The unit on the rear is only a passive radiator and is not driven as such. It responds to and interacts with the pressures produced by the main front driver. It's "ping pong" relationship with the front driver, coupled with the internal baffling, is partly what gives our Shahinians the special magic that other speakers don't seem to match. It has negligible effect on the speaker cable hanging in front of it.

The foam I put under the cable in my pic, really does cut a huge percentage of the vibration caused by the unavoidable contact with the subwoofer (A5 cable). Try it on one speaker and then play something whilst touching both speakers' cables.

Make sure the fuse contacts are shiny clean in each speaker.

I use Kimber Postmaster spades on the subwoofer end of the speaker cable which connects it to the module.

Shahinian use Wonder Solder on all internal joints. Vasken Shahinian suggested I use the same on my speaker cable connections. So a few months ago, I bought six brand new Naim plugs (so no solder contamination) and resoldered the lot with the Wonder Solder. It just keeps getting better.

Sorry if you already know some of the info, just trying to help.

Only just realised, this is a lp storage thread! Sorry for the hijack.

No problem count.d. if the speakers have got a flat top, maybe I can stack me LPs on top?

Anyway, I've a frisson of concern about what might happen to the sound when I move a stack of albums from behind one of my SL2s!

Why oh why is life so complicated?! Frown

My apologies for the hijack too! Red Face

From the Shahinian website

This permits one to make a variety of satellite choices, such as locating them directly on top of the HAWK, or at some desired distance, thereby allowing the HAWK to be utilized as a pedestal for lamps or vases, etc.

So you can put your LPs on top!

Massive thanks for the helpful information.
One of my modules doesn't quite sit with all four feet on the base unit.
I had 'solved' this with a sliver of wood, which I've never been too happy with.
I had got it in my head the feet were attached with screws,
but having checked of course you are right.
I'm starting my journey to WOMAD tomorrow morning,
so I'll have a dabble with this & clean my fuses when I get back & have time.

I have experimented with various positions for the 'between units' LS cable,
to keep it away from the passive bass unit.
I couldn't hear any difference so your conclusions are reassuring.

I tried using foam under the cable last night as you suggested,
& it's really sweetened the sound of my system so thanks again.

I also use Kimber Postmaster spades on the subwoofer end,
after an aborted attempt with Naim speaker plugs.
I wish I had heard of Wonder Solder before I had my cables made up.
I hope you don't mind me asking (upgrade temptation) ...
What improvement did you notice when you made the switch to SS?

Cheers - John

Just to clarify, I connect the amp to the Hawk sub with Naim 4mm plugs at both ends. Connecting the amp to the Hawk sub obviously uses the post's female 4mm hole, which leaves me having to connect the module via Postmaster spades at the sub end.

The problem I had with a fair comparison between general solder and the Wonder Solder was that I changed the dealer supplied spades with Postmaster ones at the same time. Also, the soldering on my Naim plugs with the general solder was done by two different dealers (not Cymbiosis) and ALL 16 joints were really awful! So I bought a 100w iron and did them perfectly with the Wonder Solder. All I can say is that with Wonder Solder/Postmaster/Naim plugs all done correctly, the difference was sweeter highs and more open sound stage, and it got even better after the first three weeks.

Tony,

I'm not much help with the lp storage. I made mine from 1" mdf and it was the most ridiculous project I can remember doing. Getting the large cabinet square, all the shelves square, finishing the exterior, lining the inner surfaces with green cotton felt, was all a nightmare. I won't do it again or advise anyone else to.

I just bought 4 of these:

They seem to do the trick quite well
