Considering a move to Munich - also recommended removal companies?

Posted by: Andrew Randle on 29 September 2010

Hi,

I have just been negotiating a job offer with a company in Munich. It is a fantastic opportunity (allowing me to interact with CXOs internationally) and a move from London to Munich could be great for young daughter (now two years old).

I've been there two or three times before on business (only a week each time) and really liked the place, but reckon that living there will be a whole different kettle of fish.

So I had a quote from Pickfords giving a part-load, but their 2 day service is quite a bit over the offered allowance, whereas the (up to) 21 day service is up to the allowance (sadly insurance is extra).

Hmmm.... does anyone have recommendations? Pickfords are said to be on the pricier end of the scale and am wondering if any other company would be less expensive and better?

Yellow pages. You haven't really got just one quote? Removal companies tend to be local so if I recommended the one that I used then they wouldn't operate from your area.

I haven't been to Munich yet (it's only 3.5 hours drive away) but I know quite a few people who have lived there. Most want to go back.

Thanks Bananahead. Just one quote so far, due to this being early days.

Dare I chance my luck with Yellow Pages? I'll use that to find some feedback of these companies on the web, but I am hoping for any recommendations here.

I would jump at the chance to move to Munich - great location in central Europe. Hopefully Huwge will be along later to say some more as he has lived here for years.

If you went for the 21 day service, how are you going to live without furniture etc for that time. When we moved to Oz and back, we had rental furniture at either end but then that is another cost. I would push back on your new company and explain to them that their package in inadequate and probably for not a lot more they could help get things off to the right start for you and your family. Good luck.

Andrew,
I live in Munich but am in Switzerland for the next fortnight. Depending on the urgency, can you wait until I get home and have a chance to look at the companies we got quotes from?

Have been living very happily in Minga the past 13 yrs.

Haha! Crossed over with Adrian's post

Thanks for the offer, Huwge. That might come in handy.

Using the Yellow pages is very hit and miss. I belong to a business to business network called Business Referral eXchange. It works by haveing local truted business people who work to high standards who can be trusted to give good value for money. If you do not maintain high standards of customer satisfaction you will be ejected from the network.

If you google BRX there may be a local group to you who has a removal firm as a member.

If there is not a local removal firm as a member contact the BRX head office and they will be glad to put you in touch with a trusted firm.

Good luck.

I think Munich is a great place however I have only been there for the Beer Festival.

Great place to live for you and your family, the relocation itself can be stressful and your new company should provide adequate support in their package.

Google Baxters Removals. They did a great job for us, and even put a boat in the trailer

Thanks Nero, I'll ask them for a quote.

Andrew,
here's a useful site for Munich

Toytown

You might also want to check in with other ex-pats from your company - places to live, school, tips, etc.

I tend to avoid the ex-pat groups as they seem to be less adept at integrating, but for a start up and getting your toe in the water before finding your own way they can be quite useful.

Andrew,

When we moved to Perth we used a company called PSS removals. Very good, and I think they were substantially cheaper than Pickfords. They may well specialise in removals to the antipodes, but might be worth a try.

Cheers kevj and Huwge. My wife has been looking around toytowngermany already and we're both impressed by the wealth of information.

We're both getting very excited and apprehensive about the relocation process. I've been starting to offload stuff and gathering info for the move.

Andrew,

I used to work alongside this company, converting their incoming and outgoing clients appliances. Nice fellas to deal with.
