Next steps... active or 82
Posted by: johno on 26 March 2002
Rega P9/900/Exact
Pink Triangle Export/SMEIV/Dynavector
Linn LP12
32.5/HiCaP/NAP250
SBL's
Apart from the front end which is still undecided.. 2 of the tables will go!
I am aiming to go active! I have another Hicap and Naxo2-4 waiting for a NAP250 at the right price...
Thing is I know people will say 82 rather than active... but the cost of an 82 (£1400-1500) over my 32.5 (£250) makes me wince! I have heard an 82 and do not think it warrants the £1200!
I would sooner get another old NAP250 £300-400 and go active.

Looks like your going active then. Don't think you need the advice that an 82 with 2 hi-caps and a 250 will easily outperform an active 32.5/250 system. It is your money!
Which deck will you keep as a matter of interest?

Not sure yet toss up between the P9 with a better cartridge or the PT not too bothered... both I snapped up off loot and shouldn't loose on either.
The PT was practically given away for what it came with! The lid is in 4 pieces mind! but the rest is fine.
The LP12 I bought first and I had thoughts of getting a OL motor for it and putting a OL RB250 on it... still may (have the RB250).
The PT sounds more airy/exciting the P9 more flat... this maybe the cartridge though.. Dynavector (PT) and the Exact (P9).

The Dyn is probably the better cartridge. Have you tried swapping them over? How are the decks connected to your 32.5?
One very important thing with the Rega is that it has to be really well isolated and dead level. There was a time when my CDX was sounding better than the P9, at which point I knew that something was wrong (on a rega wall shelf). Moved the deck onto the main stand with some extra isolation shelves and viola!

more even and controlled... less exciting.
not yet swapped the cartridges.
One into each phono stage in the 32.5
(it is a late 32.5 with the switching pot at the rear and with 72 time alignment boards).
P9 On top of a 5 shelf bolt together SO table with smoked glass 4mm shelves on rubber stops.
PT on a lower old SO table I modded to have top and bottom adjustable spikes... (like a Audiotec)
Glass topped 10mm.
Both dead level.
(I also tryed the two the other way around the PT sounded good on the lower SO too.. but maybe the PT is less prone to isolation (v. springy). Plus may not have given it (P9) enough time on the 'better shelf' (lower). Will try again.

Right that does it... all I need to do is see another advert with a NAP250 for £300 and snap it up... unfortunately when these adverts are posted you have to literally drive directly there and 'steal' it off them before they realise their mistake!
Someone 2-3 weeks ago sold in loot 2 x 135 new style for £950 the pair... kicked myself for not being quicker!

When we sat and listened to it, apres-upgrade, my dealer and I just had big smiley faces.
Go for it, you won't be sorry.

PS. My mate also tried to buy those 135s; its a jungle out there
I did it with an 82 into 250's and SBL's and upgraded to a 52 later.
I reckon it's a bigger upgrade than going for an 82.
Enjoy.
Recently i went from a 102/hicap to 82/hicaps, going active offered a greater improvement, i felt the upgrade was an improvement - but not jaw dropping as active is its what naim's all about . . .
Go active and think of it as a future investment.
