Dedicated Mains

Posted by: Flame on 23 May 2008

Hi all;

I'm moving into a new house (hopefully) next month. It is being renovated now and part of what I'm getting done is a dedicated mains cable for my hifi. Question... Should the cable terminate in a single socket and then use a hydra? Should I install more sockets? I'm using 1mm gauge cables for the job. Any advises, pointers or experiences are highly appreciated. Thanks

Actually, it's very simple. Tell your licensed electrician you want a single dedicated AC line with one outlet installed to run only your hifi. The AC line should be the maximum wire and breaker-size/rating allowed in Saudi Arabia for your equipment. If he has any questions, show him a Naim Owner's manual which contains info on dedicated mains.

The choice for a Hydra or powerstrip appears to be country-specific with respect to unique power infrastructures. Perhaps your local Naim dealer can shed some light on which method (strip or hydra) works best with the Saudi power grid?

I would have said single socket & hydra but with the advent of the Powerline I'm not sure this applies any longer....

1mm cable will not be sufficient for your equipment. 2.5mm minimum, but I would strongly recommend 6mm, 10mm should theoretically be better, but it's a pain unless you only want a single socket.

And absolutely do not mess with a consumer unit unless you're qualified, there is a world of difference between a brief shock before a breaker stops the current and a shock straight from the grid, a life and death difference.

A strange sense of déjà vu ...

Dear John,

Indeed! The last thread, rightfully in my humble opinion, disappeared.

Perhaps this is an issue for the FAQ at some time not too far into the future, as it is not about to go away with such fine pieces as Naim, which do benefit from optimal commection to the mains electricity supply as it variably exists in the various territoies where Naim has a presence.

To the original poster: Please consult Naim HQ for definitive advice on how to optimally proceed.

Hi all and thanks for the replies so far. Allow me to correct. The cable gauge is going to be 1 cm rather than 1 mm. Secondly, all the work is being done by a certified electrician who is handling all the electrical work for the villa. If anybody is gonna be electrically shocked to death, it shouldn't be me Big Grin

My primary concern was whether i should use a single socket or multiple ones.

Once again this is question best answered by Naim HQ and your local Naim retailer.

I'd have thought multiple sockets one for each Power-Line Smile
