Widescreen monitor recommendations?

Posted by: Willy on 08 April 2006

Have downsized (well more to do with weight) to a 12" widescreen laptop. Fine for my needs on the road but I need a bit more screen real estate back at the office, in particular for working with MSproject. Looking for probably 20" widescreen, DVI input. Any recommendations?

This months PC Pro has a 20" LCD group test and the Philips 200W6 does very well given its price.

Apple 20 inch at 549.

Great stuff.

I've had one of these now for 2 weeks at work, and it is fantastic. I highly recommend it.

And the winner of the PC Pro shootout was... a 24" Dell. Seems that there is a new one (2407) on the way from then anytime soon. Current thoughts are to hold off and go for a 24".

PS Garyi, Appreciate the Apple style but not propared to pay that much extra for it.

Only prob with the acer is no DVI input.

The 20" Acer widescreen (AL2032WA) has DVI input, and just about every other input option as well. Trouble is that it's got a glossy finish and where it would be located I have a Velux behind and above me.

Willy Apple monitors are widely regarded as some of the very best on the market.

Other than that I would look at LG or Dell. Although you will find the ones that use the same panel are all around about the same price mark.

You could of course always get a cheap one.

Garyi,

Don't doubt that the Apple displays are among the best. The PC Pro test rated the Acer AL2032AW as near as damn it in performance terms for a lot less money. Given that my Acer laptop is cosmetically challenged then to go to the extra expense of an Apple display is a bit of a turd polishing exercise. All a bit of a moot point as I'm more or less decided to go the 24" route where the new generation of panels (as in the Samsung 244) seem to have the edge, though probably only until Apple refresh their range.

This is possibly stating the obvious, and I doubt it will be an issue, but check that your laptops graphics chipset can drive the panel at whatever its native resolution is.

Allegedly it's good for 2272x1420 pixels.
