Anyone going to see Magazine this week?
Posted by: Kevin-W on 11 February 2009
Im going Friday, must admit to feeling incredibly excited, as I never saw them first time round.
Any of you going, or who saw them in Oxford earlier this week, would love to hear your views...

I wish I were on that side of the Atlantic Friday. If I was I would most certainly check it out.

Very good - great opening with the light pours out of me.
Most enjoyable - shame they didn't play feed the enemy though.

Hi Denis
I haven't been near a computer for the last couple of days so I didn't see your post - it would have been good to have met up. We were in the Pineapple pub before and after the gig.
I thought Magazine were superb, and I agree with Fisbey - TLPOOM was an inspired choice of opener. Highlight of the show for me was the 20 Years Ago/Definitive Gaze segue. I thought the band looked great, Noko was ace on guitar, and the audience were really up for it.
Have spent most of today listening to Magazine!

Kevin,
I met Seagull & Malcolm in the Bull & Gate and quaffed some nice Bass. My Magazine knowledge is limited to 'Real Life' & 'Secondhand Daylight' and really enjoyed songs played from those albums. I agree that Noko was excellent on guitar and the bands sound from just behind the mixing desk coming thru pretty clear. I thought Howard was a terrific showman, confidently creating theatrical effects with his commanding voice. It seems most bands I see now are 'old gits', but every one of them just get better with age. Todd Rundgren @ The Forum is a case in point, which you have commented on recently. If you want to email me (see profile), we might be able to catch up in the future. At the moment my next gig is not until October for Porcupine Tree, but I'm sure something/anything will tickle my fancy soon
This quote (wot I couldn't remember last night) is for Seagull & Malcolm
"What is life but a Spectrum and what is music but life itself"
Billy Cobham Jr.

Great show, very good sound quality from where I was standing (nearish the front, to the right).
Met Cardiacs drummer Bob Leith in the pub beforehand. He's a top man!

Denis, good to meet you at last (we missed each other at the PT gig last year.)
Excellent gig. I have all their albums and have played them regularly over the last 25-30 years (eeek!) but never saw them live.
I was a bit nervous at first hoping it would not be a disaster but the intro to 'The Light Pours Out Of Me' soon put paid to that. The songs from the first album seemed to come accross strongest although my favourite is The Correct Use of Soap. Model Worker had the expected 'I know Obama will look after me' line - still made me grin though.
For those yet to see them look away now, set list coming...

I really didn't think I knew that much of Magazine, turned out a few numbers were familiar. I went because Seagull thought it would be good (and it was).
Nice to meet you Dennis - very envious of the Prog bands you have seen.
For the benefit of Seagull...Saturday morning she brought me breakfast on a Red Heart Shaped plate, had cut the toast into heart shapes..................
