Private Topics
Posted by: SAS on 25 March 2005
I've been away from the forum for a while. Does the new arrangement for the discussion fora have anything like the old Private Topics facility? If so, I'm blind and can't find it. A guiding hand would be appreciated.

SAS,
No you're not blind, private topics were removed when the forum was overhauled a few months ago. Post-overhaul though, we have a forum which is much faster than before and where the search facility actually works...well, most of the time anyway!
Regards,
Jon

I, for one, would like to see the return of the Private Topic facility to the forum.

So would I.

Back in 2001 when I started here there was no PT facility.
There was something even better - the facility to email another member.
Unlike PTs it was totally private.
Then some twit whinged (apparently) to a very captive audience about how much spam he was receiving purely as a result of other Naim Forum users being able to access his email address.
The solution to this particular (theoretical) problem would have been at that time be to set up a web-based email account exclusively for communication with other forum members alongside the proper email address by which you had registered your membership here.
Certainly, the email address by which I've been registered since 2000 has never been within the public domain of this forum. I had an additional web-based hotmail address by which other forum members were able to contact me (until the advent of PTs.)
The facility for the above at least used to exist with Infopop software.
Unless Adam has a divide-and-rule agenda he would not wish to prevent forum members from being able to contact one another privately.

Perhaps those who want to be contactable can put their email addresses in their profiles?
To save people looking for email addresses that aren't there, those who do list their addresses could put, say, an "@" in their signature.

Jeremy,
Now that's far too logical - it will never work.

Is freedom of speech allowed ?

No.
It is, after all, Naim's forum and Adam's rules.
BTW, "freedom of speech" only applies to politics (unless you are some clever dick in the Conservative Party). Race, religion and business etc are all subject to the usual rules.....
Cheers

Rights ought not be discussed without some reference to the duties that accompany them, lest those that believe passionately in their rights become neglectful of others when exercising same. "Free speech" has never been free from the restraints of laws and basic notions of decency.
