AV2 : Front speakers problem

Posted by: karyboue on 27 June 2008

I have a huge "pshhhhh" noise in the front left speaker in any 3.2.1 modes and digital 2.0.
My AV2 only works ok in mono and direct modes

With the DVD5 set up I have noticed, using the speaker level that the right speaker sends some kind of "buz" noise into the left speaker. Confused

It happened for the first time yesterday evening but I thought it was some kind of bug so I switched the unit off-on and it was ok.
But this morning switching on-off several times doesn't change anything Frown

I have changed the NAPs and the front speakers, it is the AV2 that is faulty.

I guess you have tried to unplug it completely from power for a few minutes?

You could try a "reset to factory defaults".
Remember to note your settings before doing so, or they will be lost...

From the manual page 22 chapter 11:

To restore the default values
simultaneously across both setup pages
press and hold the handset dispkey
while the av2is in normal mode. The
modebutton flashes, three bars appear
in the display, and after a short delay
the av2will re-awake in input setup
mode.

good luck

Hi,

Thanks.
I had already reseted the unit and I just leaved it complelty off the power for 4 hours.
When I turned it on again, for a few 10th of a second there were strange symbols on the display.

I can't believe it. Frown

My unit already went to Salisbury 2 years ago because it was impossible to upgrade. Since then I had a few bugs that I never had before but they were always resolved.
But that doesn't seem to be a bug ...

(and I am receiving my big LCD screen next week, what a disappointment Frown )

Bad timing! But it always is when something fails...

I hope you use it "only" as AV-decoder, and not as preamp. So you can have at least stereo sound with your new TV until it's back from the journey to england.

all the best

Roll Eyes

I use my AV2 as the center of my system as I've decided once to be homecinema only (DVD5 + AV2 in analog mode having been good enough with music to my ears).

But from now on, I've decided to buy a "cheap" HC amp with 5.1 preout + din cables and keep it just in case ... forever.

karyboue,

Does this do it from cold, or take time to occur? (i.e. switch it off for a couple of hours, then try it again).

Check you cables also.

If it IS the AV2 and on both L+R channels simultaneously, it sounds like a faulty volume chip to me...

Hi,

The faulty volume chip made me think that I should try to turn the volume button as I only use the remote.

At first I only had stereo sound in every digital modes and when turned to stereo mode (not direct but stereo) teh AV2 was switching to mono Confused
So I switched it off-on in the back and it seems to work now ???
DVD in DD and DTS 3/2.1 now works, there is no more "mixing".
Recorded DD 2.0 DVDs are ok and can be listenned into DTS:Neo.
TV channels in analog stereo in DTS:Neo doesn't send anything to the fronts and rears but may be it is a low quality signal in the afternoon.

I have to run some more tests to check if it really works fully but it seems to.

Is it possible that it is only a "stuck button" or should I send my unit to you ?

Thank you very much.

heu ... by the way ... do you have some kind of advice for credit cards Winker because mine is mute, dead, even in cash machines, even at my bank since that very same day ...
That was not a very good week-end. Roll Eyes

hmmm...

you have given me more information now. What sounded like volume chip fault, could actually be the GEN6 processor board. If you are getting incorrect modes, this sounds ominous.

What firmware is the unit running? see here on how to obtain this (it may just be as simple as needing latest firmware onboard):-

http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3452929996/m/1782932217

The issue we will have though, this end, is re-creating the fault if its intermittant. You will need to send us details concerning your setup/connections/earthing etc

Hi,

The unit has the latest firmware, updated at the factory around october 06 because my dealer was unable do to it. The unit sn 204899 was like locked.

Before the upgrade I never had a bug.

Since it came back I has a few like :
- sometimes on DVD input only using DVD5 remote, when changing the volume the AV2 changes to the next input first.
- sometimes it looses all the set-up.
- I had noticed that when renaming inputs I had bugs, it freezes the unit. I mean it is not instantaneous but it happens after a while. So since 6 months now I have stopped renaming PC input into MAC.
- sometimes (using DVD5 set up) the test tone is very very slow to pass from one speaker to another.

- Other bug. I don't know if it is really a bug or a problem of TV sound broadcast but I had never noticed it before I send the AV2 to the factory. There is some kind of saturation/distortion on sustained sounds in DTS:Neo and DPLII modes when original sound is DD 2.0 or analog 2.0. I remember watching an opera with Natalie Dessay that was impossible to listen to. When she was sustaining notes, instead of being long straight, sharp, neat and solid notes, the more the notes were sustained the more they were distorded, speaker starting to vibrate like "brrrrr" or "frrrr" . It doesn't depends on volume level, it sounds like a recording level that is peaking too high if you see what I mean.
It never happens on commercial DVDs (except once in the movie Babel).

Since monday, the unit works perfectly.

Forgive my english as it is not easy describing those kind of things.

One bug that I had forgotten to mention and that just happened.

The display lights on and refuses to dimmer automaticaly. I have to press "disp" but it comes back some times.
Best to do is shut off the unit with the back switch and everything comes back to normal.

Incredible : exactly 1 month and the problem re-appears ???

But this time, turning up/down the volume doesn't change anything.

Hi Adrian,

It is going to Naim when my dealer comes back from vacation.

Now to watch a movie, the sound goes thru the TV that transcodes from digital to analog and goes to the AV2 in "digital" mode ... at least I have stereo that way ! Because the only working mode is "mono".

It has the last firmware but I wonder if a new firmware download to the unit wouldn't solve the problems ?
Because since the unit got the firmware upgrade/repare at the factory, I experienced a lot of bugs while with the previous firmware I never had one bug to complain about in more than 2 years.
