Request: include links to samples.

Posted by: bhaagensen on 11 January 2010

Hello,

I'm of the opinion that including clickable links to youtube, myspace, or other places where one can hear samples, should be a recommended practise [or mandatory] when posting recommendations.

A picture might be worth more then a thousand words, when it comes to music ... well you get the idea.

Its not against forum policy, is it?

What do others think, do you agree, disagree, don't care?

[Notable exceptions to such a rule could be some threads on classical music which are often accompanied by good descriptions]

ATB,

Bjørn

Probably, buying & selling clause. Richard will clarify.

Excellent notion imo. However to my shame i have no idea how to do such things. Has there been a thread on this does anyone know? And if so what might it be called? Thanks, Paul.

When creating a new post (discussion) there is a button labelled 'URL' where you can insert the internet-address of a page along with the text that should be visisble as the link.

But lets see if its allowed at all.

AH. That sounds simple enough. Thank you. Smile

Hi Bjørn,

I have never had any clickable links to youtube, myspace, or other places where one can hear samples moderated.

One could structure music posts with a format like...

Richard Thompson - Sweet Warrior (great album from 2007)

RT Official Site

RT MySpace - Recommend "Hard on Me" for 12 mins of guitar heaven.

You Tube Documentary part1/7

Documentary part 2/7 etc...

Spotify = Yes

Of course it is very nice, but not everyone has the ability working computers, so to criticise those who don't post links to audio samples is a little unfair I think.

It's not rocket science, there are people over 60 who can actually do it. Roll Eyes

If you ask there is always someone to assist.

I agree maybe OP didn't word his post as well as it could have been. Leave the recommended , lose the mandatory for instance. Smile

It was not inteded as critisisim, and as BigH47 suggests the mandatory was too much. It was merely my misguided way of saying that often a little extra effort vested in writing the post can save many more from essentially the same effort.

(I guess I was focused on the many - including yours truly - who post album covers, for which I assumed that it would be feasible to include a link)

Perhaps its a good idea not to link directly to sellers such as amazon etc.

As for the suggested format; its great, but actually more than I had in mind. I was just thinking a direct link to somewhere where one could listen to a few samples. For me, that would suffice as a rough filtering so that I can decide whether to investigate further.

Any comments, mods?

Bjørn,

Fair enough if my suggestion is a lot of information, but someone like Richard Thompson deserves to be investigated. Please tell me what you think of one of my favorite artistes.

I think it is a good idea, for people who have the ability, to post links to samples of the music.

On a related note, for those who don't have Spotify if you click the link below, or copy and paste it into your browser, its quicker than signing up on the main site page.

https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/

Sorry if this isnt allowed. I figured it would be ok because its not really selling anything related.

Indeed, you've got my attention. Funnily enough I've always wanted to get aquainted with the work of the Thompson's - ever since I got the Cohen-cover album "I'm your man" on which their son Teddy Thompson covers two Cohen-songs.

I've posted many links to MySpace and YouTube - nobody complained - however when I post about anything to do with a town in Lincolnshire that starts with Scun and ends with Thorpe - a big fist comes through the screen and reprogrammes me. I think this kind of Townophobia is unacceptable and really dislike Townist moderatiions.

It's pay only now on Spotify, I believe.

T Thompson unfortunately not as good as R Thompson.

In 'What are you listening to now', I often put hidden links to tracks in posts that look like nothing but album covers.

I'm sneaky like that.

Can anyone recommend any repositories of music that:

a) offer legal snippets,
b) have stable URLs,
c) have a broad range, including different recordings of classical works

Youtube doesn't really cut it. Can you URL iTunes excerpts, or Spotify tracks?
