Mac/ PC Based System Pics

how do you operate your mini mac as a headless device?

How do you, for example, 'start' and close down the machine? Is there any problems accessing files form an external hard drive?

The iPod Touch is sometimes used to control the SB3.



I'm thinking of going CD-less to fund a Nait XS or 122X/150X, the SB3/DM sounds rather good and will tide me over until Naim release some streaming players.

It is a system with a Macbook/Konnekt/Promitheus DAC and a Naim XS and some pro PA speakers. Bloody good combination.

I don't have the "add an attachment" link on this section of the forum. It's not ticked on my permissions for Distributed Audio!!! Why?

One of my friends are using the same PA floor monitors in his week-end warrior blues band and he likes it very much. So I thought I need to try it too. And I did.

It sounds very good with the XS from a Macbook, there is a directness and coherency (the floor monitor using a 8 inch coax inside, goes from 60 Hz to 20 kHz) which is really convincing using the floor monitor this way and sitting very close, roughly 2 m in the middle of the room.
Actually the majority of the room problems are disappearing this way. The big PA speakers in the background are mine from the same manufacturer as the floor monitor, I changed from an Avantgarde Trio to them and never looked back. They have the same 8 inch coax as the floor monitor wrapped by 4 x 8 inch bass speakers as a wrapped around sub. Sometime I like it loud and it seems my neighbours too

It is a simple HTTP controller that allows full command of Foobar.

Simply amazing....

I used this one below as well, but it could not handle "pages" for playlists and therefore froze when loading more than about 100 songs.

Here's the music server end all tucked away in a ventilated cabinet in the loft. On the botton shelf is a 1kVA UPS, a Buffalo Terastation Pro NAS and a old PC now designated as a server. This runs Squeezecentre, as well as an internal DNS server, and a Mail server.

Just out of interest what is the purpose of the mail server and DNS? Do you work from home as well?

My wireless network runs on a different subnet to the wired network. Native windows name resolution only works on one subnet, so I run a DNS server to resolve names. It also caches external DNS entries and gives me a slight performance boost. The mail server does 2 things - firstly it runs a spam catcher and auto forwards genuine emails to my iPhone. The iPhone has its own random email address that is unlikely to be guessed and in any case I can change it. The mail server also hosts shared mail and calendar folders for my wife and I. This allows me to access email and calendar seamlessly from either my laptop or my desktop. I use Softalk products as much cheaper than Exchange server.

Don't you find the two different networks frustrating or do you have a way to bridge them?

I have a number of wireless devices but I constantly need to access the wired ones from them and vise versa.

The networks are connected via a router so they have different ip address ranges. The wired network on 192.168.0.x and the wireless on 192.168.1.x. If I could be bothered to remember the ip addresses I could just type them in to the browser or remote desktop or whatever and it would work fine. The DNS allows me to use more easily remembered names - Server, Office, Garage etc.

The SB3 is fed from a Mac Mini in a different room in the house via a WiFi network.

Currently my music library is separate from iTunes but before I ripped everything to FLAC I used my iTunes library. This can be changed at anytime by pointing the SqueezeCenter software at a different directory and doing a rescan.

I'm using iPeng to control via the touch but there are a couple of similar apps you might want to look at.

I am investigating the following combination:

Qnap TS109NAS/SlimCentre/SB3/Beresford DAC/NAIT with no PC running

I want this to drive both the SB and iTunes on my PC. Can you see any problems if I use iTunes to import as I also have to run a selection of ipods?

Should work fine, all you'll need to do is tell SqueezeCenter to rescan the library after you've added new tracks in iTunes.
