Naim/Mac Users?
Posted by: Reid on 11 February 2008
I realise I could be walking right into a troll-fest here, but how many of the forum's Naim listeners are Mac users? I switched over from PC just over 2 years ago now, and I am never looking back!
iPod niggles aside (although I also love my iPod Touch, and think its capable of audio performance comparable if not greater than CD players of equal value), Apple computers and Naim products share a relatively similar similar design ethos (everything that isn't essential is stripped out to boost performance), build quality (the very Mac I'm typing on took the brunt of and protected me in quite a serious hit-and-run accident last year, the Apple service guys gave it a full bill of health) and user attitude (I'm sure both Naim and Mac users would defend their choices to the death!). It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that many of you are mac users too.
Working in hifi, the only problem is compatibility. Most high-end manufacturers are quite small-scale, and so their software only works on PC platforms, which is a bit rubbish. Although, I'm told that I could potentially control the new Linn DS systems from my iPod Touch, which would be really cool! I for one hope that NaimNet has a similar control system, swishing through album artwork and picking out amazing sounding music from it would win me over, for sure.

WHAT'S A "TROLL-FEST"?
Are you talking about ledgendary Norwegian folk metal ensemble
Trollfest

I WISH I WAS!
A "Trollfest" is generally a forum topic that gets jumped on by the grumpier members, usually with an inordinate amount of moaning on the post's topic. When I was writing it, I imagined hoards of audiophiles groaning at yet another mention of iPods...
That aside, Black Metal is pretty awesome, I may have to give Trollfest a listen now!

I didn't know.
I must get out more ..... to other forums that is

Did Trollfest take there name from forum topic jumping,
or did forum members name the manoeuvre in honour of the Band?

I'm hoping the latter!
Its late and I have a couple of installs and some Isotek training in the morning, night folks!

Count me in.
Naim system - see profile.
iMac
Plus a new ipod Touch which is way too much fun for something so compact.
I would also recommend the Delicious Monster software for cataloging, it is both fun and useful - but I guess that is what Macs are all about...

I jumped ships about a year ago and have had no regrets.
The cat managed to spill a full cafitierre over the MacBook Pro and it still works, although the cat is now banned from making coffee

It's quite worrying having to pour loads of liquid out of a laptop.

Mac gradually taking over the house. Got first Macbook 18 months ago and really liked it. Since then added Macbook Pro and Imac. One PC left, decommisioning imminent.

Reid,
G5 user for about the last five years. Three other PC's in the house (one of which I only use for Autocad), but strangely the kids always want to be on the Mac. My daughter is after a Macbook for her GCSE's, so she better start saving.
A lot of my friends have moved onto Macs and funnily enough another rang me yesterday to get some advice on his new iMac purchase. Very happy I changed.

Used an original Macintosh in 1985 and been using them off and on ever since, and continuously since 1994. Currently have black MacBook and 8GB iPod Touch, with Airport Express and AirPort Extreme wifi network. Hope to add MacMini or AppleTV as media server and connect to...
...SuperNait and DVD5 which I hope arrives on Saturday (replacing MF A5s) - waiting for the call from Music Matters. Will initially use with ProAc Tablette Refs on Atacama filled stands. Only doubt is how it all works on newly installed, lightweight floating shelves - look forward to much experimentation before having to explain to my wife that I need a Fraim!

At the start of next month my iBook is having some upgrades - going up to 10.5 as well as an extra GB of RAM, I'm hoping that this will stave off the "upgraditis" for a little longer, at least until I can afford an MBP, hopefully that'll be when they ship with a built in BD drive.
Oddly enough I was at a friends house tonight who is a mac engineer for the MoD, he's currently considering a Naim system, proving my theory!

I'm a Mac user too - first Apple computer was the Apple II and I've used them ever since. The best computer I've owned was a Commodore Amiga and I still run Amiga OS on a Mac Book Pro - surely it is what the dual boot capability was intended for.

Very happy Naim & Mac user, Naim habit was suspended last year due to an overhaul of my camera equipment. All get used equally, so don't mind the hobbies even if I get the frequent

from the missus!

Reid,
One more Mac user here, writing from a 2 years old MacBook Pro.
I'm with you when you say there is some similarities between Apple and Naim. Engineering prowess is an obvious one, but I think the way they recently entered new markets is another one.
Beware of analogies - Jacques Bouveresse

24" iMac (White plastic). My apple career goes all the way back to a IIGS in the late 80s. I am currently wrestling with whether to get a MacBook Pro to take on photo trips with me.
