nac 52 to nac252...

Posted by: ken c on 31 October 2003

i would like to hear from anyone who has done the upgrade from 52 to 252. i thought there was a recent thread discussing this, but i cant find it from a search. of course, i will have to do my own listening if i want to do this -- but in the meantime, i just want to get an idea of what to expect. many thanks...

nick, thanks for those 2 threads -- and allenb, thanks for posting your experience of the 52 to 252 upgrade. just what i wanted.

your descriptions are consistent with each other and with my experience of using the much lowly nac112 powered by a supercap. (my 52 is at naim for service so my nac112 is driving the active system for the nonce). the nac112 has given me a hint of perhaps what the new series electronics are about and i would like to dig deeper. hence the question.

many thanks guys...

ps: nick, is your dealer infidelity?

allenb,

thanks for useful update. i guess your 252 is not even fully run in so there is probably more to come! and nbl's-- wow! (un)fortunately, nbl's do not fit in my office -- so thats an upgrade that i wont be able to do. but i still need to listen to SL2's and see if i agree with all the negative views.

i agree that xpsII is probably a good intermediate step to a full blown cdsIII. the outlay doesnt seem too bad either.

as a matter of curiosity, did you sell your 52 privately, or did you simply trade it in? if latter, good trade in??

allenB, i well remember during the early days of the ARO how much negative press this item got -- even amongst dealers -- who claimed naim were simply being cotroversial and the arm would never work. same with the IBL's. so i kinda reserve my judgement with the SL2's.

i actually have quite a few dems to assess:

(a) 1xnap300 vs. 4x135's vs. 2x250 in my active system
(b) SL2's vs. SBL's with 2x250 and then 4x135's
(c) xpsII vs. xpsI for my cdsii -- and then cdsII vs. cdsIII to assess how far the xpsII/cdsII approaches the cdsIII
(d) nac252 vs. my nac52 but with my current olive supercap
(e) nac552 vs my nac52

some of these are more immediate than others -- you can guess which. this whole process will take some time -- especially when you consider the full matrix of possibilities!!! ... but i hope a clear upgrade strategy will emerge without spending too much time.

thanks for your info.

anyone know how to edit the title of a thread past the edit window. the title of this thread may be confusing as there is no such thing as a nac25. dyslexic? (sp?)

ken,

when you consider the full matrix of possibilities!!! ... but i hope a clear upgrade strategy will emerge without spending too much time

of course you MUST do all the dems, assuming both you and your dealer have the time and patience........

when i saw richard had posted i naturally assumed that naim were putting your matrix into the proper upgrade sequence........if only life were that simple.....

cheers

dont you just wish!! on the other hand, perhaps we dont want it that simple -- we want to listen for ourselves and make up our own mines. however, a few clues here and there would help.

i am hoping that when i eventually get round to do the listening -- enough clues will surface to suggest a way fwd without exhaustively testing the matrix of possibilities.

for example, i continue to discover things that active sbl's can do that i was never aware of -- this means perhaps sbl to sl2 may not be that high a priority.

still, some comments from richard at this stage wouldnt hurt...

Hi Ken,

I will be upgrading from my own '52 to a '252 in a few weeks time. Once it's had time to burn in and settle into the system, I'll let you know.
