A best wishes to Londoners thread - (no politics to be posted please.)
Posted by: Deane F on 07 July 2005
My thoughts are with all of those caught up in these attacks and with the British people in general.
And to the members of this forum who live in London or who have connections there - I offer my best wishes and hope that you are all safe and well.

My wife has just heard from a dear friend here in Cairns that her daughter who lives and works in London is safe and well.
In a city that huge we did not feel that she would be one of the victims but now know that at least seven Australians are injured.
Australians admired the citizens of London in the last war and judging by the way they handled themselves today that respect is well justified.
Accept my thoughts and condolences please...

Our family prays for the injured and the families of those who lost their lives.
We are strengthened by their courage.
If history (even modern history) has taught us anything, it is 'Don't make the British people mad, they'll come and get you.'

I have never been to London. Never been to England nor Europe. The news of the bombings in, what I have always imagined to be a charmed and beautiful city, have disturbed me greatly. I have friends there and I have been told that they are alright. God bless. Not knowing any of you folks who live in London has only deepened my thoughts for you all. To those who have a loved ones injured or worse, my heart goes out to you.
I have never been to London. But I am now, more than ever, truly looking forward to visiting and meeting as many of you remarkable folks as possible. Bless you and protect you all.

My thoughts and best wishes go out to the families, and to those affected, injured or killed by these unspeakable acts...Sorry if this is a bit sentimental, I had the privelege of being a (sort of) Londoner in the mid-80's...
I love the city: the lovely green spaces and parks that remind you that its roots are in old English villages; rounding a corner and discovering yet another building with a blue plaque (identifying a historical residence of someone important in the arts, letters, science or history of Britain or even the world); the living history of Parliament and the Courts of Law in the City (this is where, after all, democracy and the modern rule of law from which all the civilised world benefits emerged); most of the great works of English Literature have some London association, and indeed London is the city from which English itself became the language of the world. Indeed, spending time in Londons' myriad bookshops helped transform me from an illiterate school dropout into someone with a keen interest in literature and history. (Don't get me started on the great music available there.)
But most of all, the people. Lively, intelligent, multi-racial, decent and kind, the best kind of citizens for a pluralistic democracy. I lived alone, more or less on my own resources, but whenever I had any kind of difficulty, somehow a Londoner stepped in and helped me get alright again.
London and its citizens withstood the brutal attacks of the Nazis, and managed a smile & cheers when George VI and the Queen came round for a visit to their bombed-out East End homes.
If there ever was a final, apocalyptic battle for the survival of "our way of life" (and I sure hope that's never necessary!), I'd be honoured to make my stand alongside the people of London, England.

"It is not that we don’t believe in Western values as much as we don’t even know what they are anymore. The London bombings were only a reification of what goes on daily with impunity blocks away in the mosques and Islamist schools of London."

Nice one Jim. Why did you think this thread was a good place to post it?
Posted on: 08 July 2005 by Chumpy
Best wishes to all concerned in tragedies etc/may we stop them happening/all be kinder in one world.
Posted on: 09 July 2005 by Jim Lawson
Because some Londoners are not worthy of our "best wishes".
Posted on: 09 July 2005 by Deane F
So, Jim, if that's what you think start a thread to that effect.

Which Londoners did you have in mind, Jim?
Posted on: 09 July 2005 by Jim Lawson
Thanks for the suggestion Deane.
JonR,
"Those Londoners" would be any individual or group that was involved in the planning of and/or carrying out this or any future act of terrorism.

And how many of those Londoners are reading this thread? Pull your head in Jim.

Unless you have knowledge, as yet not available to the police, I would request you do not post such comments.

Or - a quote from Victor Hanson, who has also written "Terror is the signature of the Islamist: hit, back off; hit, back off — hoping in a few years to erode the will and nerve of affluent and leisured Western countries."
This seems to me to be exactly the smearing of the divide between "terrorist" and "Muslim" which is the primary purpose of these attacks and not something we should promote.

Well, the first plact to look would be 10 Downing Street where the Prime Minister and his cronies, a bunch of gangsters and criminals, have plotted and planned to attack countries like Afghanistan and Iraq.

I must admit I was rather taken aback myself at the ensuing silence after the above comment was posted ? As Our Deane explicitally & quite rightly requested this particular thread to be Politically free, to stop kids like me making 5 bob jokes every two seconds on all and everything. When You wrote 'Nice One' Dean I didn't quite catch the meaning of your jist mate ?

It was sarcasm Fritz. I thought the title of the thread was explicit enough.
I did suspect the thread would, sooner or later, devolve to political one-liners and attempts to sound both witty, cynical and learned all at once. And it has.
Posted on: 11 July 2005 by Berlin Fritz
OK, Cheers for that, though sarcasm as you know can be often counter-productive. I have a Mosque directly next to where I live, and I suspect that if anybody dared to deface it, the authorities would be down on them like a ton of bricks, not to mention if they were daft enough to get caught by one of the locals God forbid. I hear that some British Mosques have been damaged over the last few days in isolated instances too, though I wonder proportionally how many New Zealand actually boasts in total ?
