I'm quite fond of London Calling. Also, Leonard Cohen is quite good, The Future and Suzanna (on The Songs of Leonard Cohen), First We Take Manhattan (I'm Your Man) are all good openers.

I think The Key to her Ferrari (Aliens ate my Buick) from Thomas Dolby is brilliantly bizarre and Dissidents (The Flat Earth - which anyway is one of the best put together albums I know).

I like Sunday Morning (The Velvet Underground and Nico) and The Boy in the Bubble (Paul Simon's Graceland). Baba O'Riley (Who's Next) is superb.

Sorry - that's rather more than one but I've never been any good at picking one favourite!

I can not argue with Munch's excellent choice, but I would put in some of these - the openers of which have placed an indelible mark on my memory. I think I'll go put em on....

The opening track on Trouble Over Bridgwater is Irk The Purists, which is an absolute stunner of a track.

Nottamun Town one of the finest folk tunes ever and the definitive version is the opener on Shirley Collins's Folk Roots New Roots

Another great opening track with a marvellous lead-in is Kore from the album below

10.15 Saturday Night from the Cure's Three Imaginary Boys is a brilliant opening track. But there are so many it's impossible to really pick a favourite.

I thought Trouble over Bridgewater was just a joke from an episode of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue!

PS I always think it a tremendous song that really echoes my sentiments that if you like something then you like it and a critic (or me for that matter) saying otherwise should make no difference.

PPS - Dear Tam, do you have any links that would help me track down and buy Janáček chamber music, I read the thread with interest, but the recommended recordings are a real challenge to find. Many thanks, Rotf.

I Wanna Be Adored - The Stones Roses but then every other track on that album is a peach and it also has the best finishing track - I Am The Resurrection.

I think the opening tracks to each of the first three Roxy Music albums (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure & Stranded) are a pretty good way to start.

Beat me to it, SJB! The pent-up energy and scruntch of the opening notes from that Strat, followed by the awesome 'thump' from bass and drums - da-da, da-da-da-dah, thump - it just sets you up, you know you're in for a good one.

(A different excellent performance (the later classic line up band) I've just found.)

John, I shall definitely do that. Thanks! Won't be this year though - we are taking a look at New York in a couple of weeks as Rachel has never been there and is very keen to go.
