Any good jazz or blues venues? We only have 6 nights in NY (after 6 nights on the ship getting there!) so want to do/see as much as our tired limbs will allow in the city. We are staying in Murray Hill about 2 blocks East of the Empire State Building.

Chris - where to start with that question.

Loads of good places - I have visited quite a few.

Try the Village Vanguard for the home of jazz. A dark, old, underground jazz club on seventh avenue in the village. So much jazz history has happened here. They are on the web so you can see the schedule as to whether you will like the music. It is not a flash place by any stretch.

You can try the Blue Note on east 3rd in the Village - much more flash. Again their schedule is on the web.

Birdland is another good venue up on 44th street - good for dinner and music. The Iridium as well. Then there is BB Kings club on 42nd Street near Time Square . Check out Time Out New York magazine for other listings or try City Search on the web.

Enjoy NY

Chris - when are you there? I could let you know what jazz I would recommend seeing, if any, when you are there if you are interested.

Cheers

Chris

Adrian has hit all the best notes for club recommendations. I might add the Jazz Standard where my friend Johnny King (one of Mulgrew Millers's students) plays all the time. Email me if you want some record buying advice, I dont want to hijack this great thread.

I have some other clubs in mind too. Not in NYC but just outside in Brooklyn.

That nice John guy (thanks Howard Smile

Thanks guys. On topic how about
"Back in the USSR" on the White Album?

Continuing with the Beatles "Tax Man" to open up Revolver. I think "Sympathy for the Devil" to start off Beggars Banquet is pretty amazing. "Motherless Children" on 461 Ocean Blvd.

Ballad of a Chrome Nun from Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun

Another Time from One Nation Underground

Love Without Sound from White Noise: An Electric Storm

Friday 13th from Atomic Roooster (yes it does have a triple 'o')

God Save The Keg from Secret Voyage

Chris - I have had a look around.

Things I would check out are

Lou Donaldson at the Blue Note Oct 1/2. Birdland is a good club.

Not sure on your jazz tastes but the Bad Plus at the Village Vanguard on Sep 27/28 would be challenging. They play a lot of rock tracks in a loud jazz style. I saw them in Sydney with MilesSmiles a few months back and it was awesome but not easy listening. Fun though. You would of course get to experience the world famous VV which is very different to Birdland for the other clubs.

Dave Douglas and Randy Brecker (he played trumpet on Springsteen's Born to Run album) at the Jazz Standard on the 28th has the potential to be superb.

Check out TimeOut magazine as they have good listings of events and thete may be some gems I did not come across.

Have a great trip.

My favourites are:
Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot from Daydream Nation.

Pyschedelic Furs - India from Pyschedelic Furs (don't get fooled by the quiet intro).

Kings Of Leon - Knocked Up from Because Of The Times.

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony from Urban Hymns.

REM Radio Free Europe fromMurmur.

I agree on "Teenage Riot"

A few others that come to mind:

"Pay Your Rates" The Fall's Grotesque album

"Where Is My Mind?" Pixies' Surfer Rosa (OK-- it's the first song on side two!-- but it's usually the side I play first)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana's Nevermind

School Days from Loudon Wainwright III's eponymous first album - probably the best song he ever wrote. Come to think of it, probably one of the best songs ANYONE ever wrote.

Salut

Caught In a Dream on Love It To Death by The Alice Cooper Group.

If you don't know what this great track sounds like then please click here.

The whole album (please click here) is a gem and it is probably one of the ultimate rock albums and Vincent Damon Furnier's finest 30 minutes. The final track is a storming version of Sir Rolf Harris's Sun Arise.
