Patrick Moore

What a fantastic character he is. How many kids has he turned on to astronomy? I'd love if the BBC turned The Sky at Night into a weekly, peak time show but that's maybe just me.

Where does he get his suits? Every time I see him his waistband is higher. At the moment it's just under his armpits.

Here's to you Patrick. Cheers.

Did you see the two programmes last night? Smile

Good grief, when I first saw the thread title I thought you were going to announce his death!

Ditto. How old is he? does anyone have a clue? He seems to have been the same all my life - and I'm 54!

Isn't Ths Sky at Night the longest running tv programme of all time? Anywhere?

I was doing some very late surfing (as coincidentally I'm doing just now) and I came across one of the 50th anniversary Sky at Night programmes on cable.

He's a national treasure. Let's hear it for him.

Aren't all these repeats on because he's retired?

Bob
Posted on: 19 September 2005 by TomK
He hasn't retired. The Sky at Night is still on every month and just recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

I admire his inspirational enthusiasm but I did read an interview with him quite recently which revealed him to have political views that would have made Enoch Powell blanch. I wish I'd not read it as it has rather spoiled my opinion of someone I took to be an amiable eccentric.

I heard him give a very interesting lecture on manned space flight a few years back. But it's true, his politics do temper my view of him somewhat.

Yes, this is true. I believe he was also friendly with the McWhirter brothers of 'Record Breaker' and 'Freedom Organisation' fame. A right wing organisation which supported aparthied in South Africa, for example.

Well that's an eye opener. I remember reading about McWhirter and the antics of the Freedom association whilst studying politics at college many years back.

What a shame Moore's views are apparently so similar.

He also wrote the book "Bureaucrats and how to annoy them" under the pseudonym R.T.Fishal

Some choice bits of advice were:-
  • in the space "For Official Use Only" rub it with the base of a white candle.
  • When complaining to a jobsworth always give a reference number to your letters e.g. tax01, tax 02 etc. Then cause chaos by asking in tax07 why they did not reply to tax06 which was never sent.
  • Get two tax offices talking to each other

Well worth a read for a giggle if you can find a copy

A very strange man indeed, in my opinion. Probably not a man with whom to leave adolescent boys.

I'm wondering why graham thinks adolescent boys would feel it necessary to beat up a fat, old, TV science programme host? Oh of course! For wearing a monocle and having a high waistband. Serves the old bugger right! Bleedin' pensioners innit! Roll Eyes

It never really occurred to me that Pee More might be at risk from the adolescent boys whom he would so covet, but it strikes me as a lovely sort of retribution! Bl**dy old oxygen thief.

I shall sleep Moore Easily tonight.

Oh dear! Another old character, who on the surface has always amused me, proves to have clay feet. What a shame.

In spite of the snide comments and attempted character assassination I'll take him at face value and still rate him as a genuine treasure of British broadcasting. Sorry Graham but I thibnk that comment was unneccesary.

As Mick says everybody's entitled to a political opinion and I've had many extremely good friends with very different opinions from mine. It makes for extremely interesting conversations after several pints of Guinness!

Patrick Moore has human failings shock! Unlike us, eh?

Apart from those who accuse others of what they fear most in themselves, perhaps?
