Lots of new toys released today, including an updated Mini (still life in the old dog yet) which may be of interest here....

Prices are too steep. £650 for one with a 320G HD.

The 120G HD one is better value given the price of external drives but it does feel like they are staring to get a little expensive for what they are. I don't think anyone that picked up one of the old spec ones recently will feel hard done by.

I was hoping that the new Mac Minis have the same design like the Time Capsule, but in glossy black of course. So I'm a bit disappointed here and have to wait for the next round...

Cheers

Hmmm, not sure it's ever gonna happen Scaramucce...I'm actually surprised they have kept it going actually, in it's current capacity, without the much mused overhaul to a home entertainment hub......

As a pro-sumer model, I was always more a fan of the G4 Cube anyhow....

Though, of course, to update things, one could always do this....

Sweet I have been waiting for this to come out. Looks like it should play HD movies just fine

Oh yeahh. The Cube.
My wife s Cube is still standing in the corner of my living room.
Never sell him - its a Designicon.

All good stuff BUT entry level seems to have jumped up a bit. They must be happy with their market share and don't need to tempt more into the apple.

Bill Gates must be rubbing his hands together.

Don't know why he doesn't sell desktop computers or laptops.

I have a question. I'm considering buying a Mac mini to put behind my stereo system, and running the HDX into a router I'll hook up to the Mini. I'll then use the Mini as my 'main' computer for downloads related to the HDX, ie, hi-res., as well as to integrate a NAS. I have an iMac in another room, but think it might be better to have a separate system for the HDX. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am the first in my circles to change to apple and all as impressed as they were with the quality, looks, feel and importantly operation of the software they were reluctant to shell out the extra cash. Everyone makes their choice but the ones that were on the verge of sitching may now have been lost. I'm more than happy anyway

Truth be told that at work I have 3 pcs the first being 5 years old in every day use and only last week it caught a virus and has been sent for repair - not bad. The flip side being that we also have one 2 year old that has crashed but I believe by the abuse received from the operator.

The important question docmark is do you intend using the mini for playing video files? i.e. why does it have to be behind your TV?

My mac mini is the main source in the media centre. The appletv has been relegated to the upstairs TV.

It sources its contents from a NAS drobo in the garage. That way there is very little in the way of noise in the living room, the mini is virtually silent. I am yet to find an external harddrive that is the same.

Because there is no margin in commodity computer hardware ... unless you are in a specialist area of high perceived value, like Apple, that commands premium prices.

Sorry, NOW I know what you mean. Even though he doesn't build the actual computers his empire still benefits.

There has to be a reasonable margin being made for the likes of sony and others to be producing. With his power and the size of the market in question If he took what I call in England a Primark approach there would be more than a worthwhile margin. Why would he get involved as he has a guaranteed sell through the software without having to put up with the returns ques that arise when selling quantity over quality.

Why is after to a new Mac? Heard he was trying to order one on-line, but his PC crashed.

Not good though; how many times does it crash each day? I have one for work and it always needs rebooting at least once a day: neither my Amiga or Mac crashes.

nice one ROTF,

I have taken a bite into apple too, I'm on your side I was just saying that entry level has gone up.
