Pat Martino

Posted by: Minky on 07 September 2005

Hi all,

I've been listening to Pat Martino's "We'll be together again" a lot lately and wondered if you knew if he had done anything similar. I've listened to a few samples from other albums which all seem to fall into the million notes a minute, mega-virtuoso category. I prefer my music to be musical.

Also .. I've always liked Joe Pass but don't own any of his albums. Can anyone suggest a good place to start ?

I haven't heard a whole lot of Martino, but most of what I have heard leans decidedly toward the virtuoso display end of the continuum.

But if you prefer your music to be musical, as do I, you can't go wrong with almost anything by guitarist Jim Hall.

Hi Minky,

I have the 'Cream' album by Martino, it's got a cool, slightly dated groove which I kinda like, but I agree he can get a bit busy.

Have to second Fred's recommendation of Jim Hall, either as a leader or anything he did with Paul Desmond.

You may want to go into less traditional guitar stuff by having a listen to Bill Frisell or John Scofield.

Cheers

Rick.

Hi Fred and Ricky,

Thanks for the thought re Jim Hall etc but I'm already very well stocked in those departments (I'm giving the neighbourhood a volley of John Scofield and Pat Metheny battling it out on "I can see you house from here" as we speak).

What I'm really after is more stuff in the vein of "We'll be together again" - if you have heard it you will know what I'm talking about.

My Brother is a massive fan of Martino and the album that I have heard that best suits your requirement is "Consciousness", very musical.
