TV comedy from the US; trounces the UK?

Muchachos
just realised that I could quite happily watch 2-3hours of US comic TV per soir; Scrubs; Friends, Samantha Who?, My Name Is Earl ( OK I know its stopped but what the hey ).
Writing verges on the sublime; laugh-out loud funny, on plenty of occasions.
Apart from Dad's Army and Hyperdrive, can we compete?

....Nice to see the US comedy Big Bang Theory given a brief mention......seriously folks try and catch it whenever Ch4 /E4 decide to give a regular earlier evening time slot. (series 3 has just started in the US)
...It's also one of those shows which is not afraid to dumb up rather than down (not unlike Frasier in that respect)
IMHO it's genuinely laugh out loud funny and to be honest the Geekiness of the characters must surely be recognised by all HIFI afficianados such as those who post here!

there's not much worth while coming from the US broad cast networks these days.
Office and Scrubs are pretty good.
does anyone remember SOAP? it was on in the late 70s. i was only a kid at the time but recall it being hilarious. and i was a benny hill fan too.

Three American classics, IMO:-
1) Seinfeld
2) The Larry Sanders Show
3) Married with Children

It's interesting how comedies have turned to make the father figure a bafoon (sp) ie Married with Children. Many comedies are great fun the first year then it just gets to be the same old Schtick.
The one I really liked was Rosanne. While others were about wealthy or large families with idiots for parents. Rosanne and Goodman were down to earth, seemed to have lessons about life and kids had a good parents. There was no putting things over on my father or you got the look of death.
Yeah I too hate the canned laughter, I'd love to turn off the laugh track. I don't watch much TV now because they have so many commercials. You only get 16 minutes of a show the rest ads for other shows and commercials.
I'm going to be downloading shows on netflix so I don't have that torture. I'm finding a sameness about US and BBC, in bad comedies and those mystery/cop shows. Tho US cop shows just are awful with special effects jumping around and hyping every moment. And what's all this talking to dead people and vampires, GAAACK!
I'll shut up now.

I can't comment on most of the shows mentioned as I've never watched any of them.
However one that I did watch and had me in stitches every time was "Police Squad".
Although I've never watched it, I though "Friends" was a soap opera?

I tend to dismiss the UK offerings because I feel they are nothing special, they are home grown and besides aren't all comedies the same quality as ours? No they are not but some shine in their own right. A good few years ago when I moved across the pond to both work and travel in the USofA I discovered the delights of 24 hour cable and filled my free time with the likes of;
Simpson's,
King of the Hill,
Roseanne,
Brett Butler,
Married with children.
Plus other old series that reinforced my stereotypes of what the USA had to offer and all were funny as most have stuck in my memory for a long, long time.
The likes of Buffy, Angle and Dr Who while not classical comedy sure do make me chuckle but I think animation is king with Family Guy, American Dad and a couple of others leading the way. Black Hole Theory (geeky funny), How I met Your Mother (Gentle), The Guild (knowing, hip, Youtube) are well worth a look.
I find that I am swayed by the latest comedy I have seen and enjoyed but I still have a soft spot for Round The Horn, The Navy Lark and anything else remembered from Sunday dinners listening to the wireless almost a million of years ago.

You wait until series 3 or 4 of Friend and tell me they don't get on your tits.
Craig Charles was never in Friends...
I'll get my coat.

From the USA I like the shows from Frasier, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Malcolm in the Middle, M*a*s*h, Cheers, 8 simple rules, and Happy Days.
British favorites are Yes minister, My Family, Coupling, Blackadder, Are you being served, Fawlty Towers and The thin blue line.
The one that makes me cry with laughter is My Family.

I must be one of the very few in the UK who thinks The Office is a bore-fest. Gervais is massively overrated in my view.

yeah the Muppets never put out a bad show. My favorite scene was Julie Andrews guesting, but there are so many.
