Logitech Duet - FC2x/NAC122x/150x - or - Logitech Duet into DAC of SuperNAIT
Posted by: HIghfid3l_IT on 21 January 2009
Hello There!
I sold my CD5x this weekend (with tears in my eyes!) and am looking into a possible next step.
At present my set consists of a SB Duet Receiver into a NAC122x fed by a FC2x and connected to a NAP150x.
The guy who bought my CD5x has a SN which he will swap for a 282/250 at "our" dealer.
Now I'm invited to swap my combo FC2x/NAC122x/150x for the SuperNAIT, so I can use the SN DAC and have more power less the FC2x.
Is this a No Brainer of do the sets differ in sound a lot?
I quite like my set at this point and am getting used to the sound I now get.
Any thoughts besides the "listen and choose wisely"?
FYI I never have actually heard what a SN can do!

It will sound VERY different. You will, for sure, get a lot more out of the SB with a SNait, but you do need to consider what your other sources would be.... And, in general, the 150x and the SuperNAIT sound very different. But I think you do owe it to yourself to give it a listen.

I would decide first which amplification is more to my taste and later what to do to with the digital source. I guess you can obtain very good results with your Duet just adding later a decent DAC. SN is sure a very good "one in all" solution but for me how it sounds it is more important than its convenience.

Hi HighFid3lity
I got the same idea to let go of my CD5x and 122+150 for a SN, then use a SB and transport for playback. I borrowed a SN at the local dealer and tried it out. I ended up listning to the CD5x and SN. SB or transport into SN DAC is not as good the CD5x and FC2. The SN is a different amp compared to the 122+150 yes, but 122+150+cd5x is much better than SN and DAC (In my ears) I dont know if I will buy the SN some day, I think I will try a better preamp as a start.
Best regards
BMJ

Thanks for the replies!
The reason to post this kind of question is to me, the fact that I'm demo-tired
But in the end it's me who has to like the SN+SBDuet over the 122x/150x/FC2x+SBDuet.
I already sold the CD5x, so that's no option at the moment.
The choice is the above and is most likely going to be a one-on-one swap; no money involved. So I'll try to get a home-demo of a few days so I can decided if the SN+SBDuet tops the current combo I'm starting to like more and more.
I'll be back

i use an SN through the dac via optical into airport express. sounds great to me much better than any 5 series combo. when i demmed the SN i took my laptop and played music via digital spdif out into the SN whilst listen to exactly the same track but just a few seconds behind via a CDX2 (with kudos C10's and chord epic cables). i found the amps dac to be much more textured and less agressive with much better layering of the music.
there is much hype about the SN at the moment but you are the only one who can make the choice.. enjoy the ride then try to settle down with something. the SN is a 'keeper' for me ill be keeping it till it dies... i only buy intergrated amps, have for decades and IMHO its one of the best i have heard
check my profile for what the rest is. if your setting up a system from scratch it may help. ive spent over £10K in systems in the last year or so and the combo i now is spot on.

Hi,
i run my SN with a SqueezeboxDuett (SD)via coax and i am totally satisfied. It sounds great and the handling of the SD is also great, i didnt regret the step of selling my CD-Player.
Of course the SN has a totally diferent sound to the 122/150, but i like it very much. The SN sounds more adult, more punch depth and 3d, the 122/150 is more analytic and colder, what i dont like very much. For me its a no brainer to buy SN/SD.

Interesting reading. As I wrote earlier I tried out the solution with SN and found the SN to be a great amp but music through the DAC was not at level with what CD5x could deliver, even through my 122+150. Maybe I did something wrong with the digital interface? I used coax as well.
I am really considering to try it out again.

BMJ

BMJ,
I think that the SN DAC does a very nice job and the music played through a SB duet or Sonos very enjoyable for casual listening. It does not compare in any fashion to what you have using your CD5x.
In fact I have SN/Sonos and it sounds really nice until you listen to the better source and then you realize what's missing.

Hi Gary
Thats more like what I experiensed, SB and transport into SN - nice indeed - but with the CD5x+FC2 much better, one of my friends said "is this the same CD?"
Reading about people selling CDP's for SN+SB I thought I might missed something, but again it is hard to belive that you get CD5x+FC2 sound and a very nice amp on top for just a little more money.
I'll sleep better now, thanks Gary.

BMJ,
Others are sure to debate you on your last comments if you've read through any of the DA threads about DACs and various combos. Some have sold their higher end Naim CDPs due to what "they" heard and that's fine and their opinion.
Ultimately only you and your ears can decide.

I have SN/HC2 & CD5x/HC2. I also run a SB. The SB in to the SN/HC2 combo sounds very nice, much better than just in to the N. However the CD5x/HC2 combo really shows up the SB for what it is. Having said that, for £150 the SB is a fantastic bargain and I would be happy to listen to it if I did not know better.
I would look at getting a good DAC with your current combo or even with a SN.

Huw

Hello Again!
I've been doing a lot of other stuff lately and did not expect all these replies after my "I'll Be Back!".
Thanks anyway; I still have the same set and did not come around to testing the SN yet.
Then again, if one reads the topic-title, using a CD5x really isn't part of the equation.
I'm becoming a father again and sold the CD5x for some quick fundings. So it's really no option in this thread.
I believe, without ever having heard it, the SN WILL sound more alive than the combo I have now, which will be a good thing to me. If it comes without the extra cost, even better!
And you have the luxury of A-B-ing a SB and a CD5x: I know the CD5x very well (!), but one can get used to limits very fast when nothing better is at hand!
So now I'm just waiting for a signal to make my move at the dealer

The SN is a fine amp, and it's nice to have just one amp with a decent DAC, when you have a SB as source.
(rather than 3 black boxes and an external DAC)
Still, I don't think getting a SN is a no brainer! Your combo and the SN differ to much sonically.
Personally, I think you'd be better off by keeping your wonderufl 122x/FC2x/150x combo!
(and getting a good DAC for the SB)

Alco
