Posted by: GerardL on 08 January 2006
If you need assistance finding some new music their are some online methods discussed in this URL=http://technology.guardian.co.uk/online/insideit/story/0,,1677853,00.html]Guardian article[/URL] written by my brother Mark.
It is mainly about Pandora the offshoot of the Music Genome Project, set up in 2000 by a group of musicians and music technologists who wanted to create "the most comprehensive analysis of music ever".

Gerard,
I spotted a similar vote for Pandora a few months ago, and the link has been a permanent resident on my PC's desktop ever since.
I like the way it suggests alternatives to listen to based on the groups and artists you input. A fantastic find - and at no cost.

The downside is that you type in Shirley Collins and get a really nice track (of course) then it suggests Anne Briggs, who I wasn't aware of, and plays yet another stunning track. So I explore Anne Briggs a bit more and find she is excellent and so I start buying lots of CDs by her. Well 2 CDs as Anne stopped recording because unlike me, Anne thought her recordings sounded dreadful

Pandora is free, but can work out expensive.

When I click the URL the window opens with the "Q" in it,a few seconds later the Q goes slightly faint and Done comes up in the bottom banner and then nothing. Seems to be in Mozilla,Opera and IE.If I click the Quicktime icon it opens the player ok.

LastFM is completely different and because it works by linking you up with people who like similar music to you, based on music that you play from your PC/Mac/iPod, it is more organic and requires more participation.
The recording quality is much nicer on Pandora, and lots of music is too obscure or old to be streamable from Last - but overall Last seems to be more satisfying as something I can dip into at any time, unearthing new stuff that's genuinely interesting.
Anyway, they're both worth playing with.

I found a link to Pandora a couple of months ago and thought it was really good. However, after a few plays it 'timed out', since then I can no longer log onto it, I tried to register as an official user and was unable to due to the registration process requiring a U.S.A. zip code. I notice from this thread that some users are non U.S.A. residents, how have you managed to register on the site?

I just deleted the
/Users/Rotf/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash\ Player/\#SharedObjects/GC42UDT5/pandora.com/
directory on my Mac and Pandora restarted - however, I'd prefer to register properly.
Just search for Pandora using Spotlight and delete those with Pandora.Com - but, be careful not to delete that 5,000 page thesis you just finished called Pandora.
