Paul Simon Recommendations
Posted by: Sloop John B on 12 May 2006
I bought the "Shining like a National Guitar" for Mrs Sloop. She has just asked me if I have any other solo Simon. I do have Graceland on vinyl but no others.
What albums form his back catalogue would you recommend?
Thanks
John

You can't go wrong with Paul Simon - if it is just his solo albums then his first album Paul Simon is wonderful, my next favourite is Still Crazy After All These Years, but if there's a bad Paul Simon album then I've yet to hear it. Of course, you've got Graceland or I'd have recommended it.
If you're looking for S&G then try The Collection [Sounds of Silence/Bookends/Bridge Over Troubled Water] for £17 - the packaging could be better, but the contents are superb.
There are few artists whose output is as consistently good as Paul Simon.

I agree with the above comments. I don't think Paul Simon could put out a bad album if he tried. Graceland, as you know, is a helluva album. Rhythym of Saints, which often is overlooked when compared to Graceland, also is excellent (especially if you really like Graceland). In terms of more "traditional" Paul Simon, his first solo album, named Paul Simon, is exemplary, as is Still Crazy .... A more recent album, You're The One, also is very, very good, although the songs did not get much radio play. I hear he just came out with a new album, but I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet.

Paul Simon in Eno collaboration!
I know Bono and he knows Ono, she knows Eno's phone goes thus:
'Brian's not home he's at the North Pole, but if you'd like to leave a weird noise..
Well Mr S usually get's it right - actually I have met Eno (years ago) and he was very normal and nice guy ....

And more pleasing to the eye than i recall......

I actually like Rhythm of the Saints more than Graceland ...darker, more mysterious, more interesting harmonic and melodic palette.

I have just been out and bought Graceland on CD on the strength of this thread. I am playing it now and it is quite good, in fact very good.
Then like a fool I remembered I got a brand new LP still in the wrapping that I once bought and never got round to playing when the Garrard was being serviced by Loricraft.
Such is life.

Yes nothing succeeds quite like excess with Mrs Sloop!

Paul Simon (not least of all with Garf.) is probably with Dylan/Costello my favourite and so I would commend everything he has officially (& unofficially exists as .mp3) released - even that 'Capeman' failure/West Side Story re-jig thing. Next month's album eventually sounded fine to me also despite lots of strange modern-type digital noises in background ...

I go back and forth between the two in terms of which I like best. What I find surprising is that while Graceland is held in very high regard and usually is the first Paul Simon solo album that is mentioned in any discussion, Rhythm, which is remarkable in its own right, often gets overlooked and I'm not really sure why. Also, You're The One, which I listened to earlier today in the car, is brilliant and similarly overlooked.

Mick - The vinyl is much better than the original CD release of Graceland. If you picked up the more recent remastered version of the CD (which will contain some "bonus" songs after the regular album), you may want to do a quick comparison to the vinyl. I find the remastered CD versions to be quite good in terms of sound quality.

Surprised nobody has mentioned One Trick Pony - think it's an amazing album. How could it not be - Paul Simon and and Tony Levin

Im with you Guatam.
One trick pony is my favourite with Hearts and Bones a close second.
One trick pony especially shines on vinyl as it is an all analogue recording. Things went down hill sonically after that to my ears.

Rhythm of the Saints.
Wonderful drums, wonderful songs.

If you like Rythm of the Saints you might like Ritual Beating System by Bahia Black, which is basically the samba school from Rythm of the Saints, plus on some tracks jazz musicians like Herbie Hancock and on some other tracks the samba singer Carlinhos Brown. Beautiful record, well worth checking out. Not harmed at all by the fact it's produced by Bill Laswell

That brings up the possibility of some bedroom shenanigans I'd rather not contemplate.

Hi,
I think Robert Fripp is married to Toyah Willcox?
