Aktiv keilidhs snaxo or tunebox?

Posted by: Scotty on 28 October 2003

Dear all,
forgive the return to a question on keilidhs but I couldn't find an answer to the question I have in the forum already and I could really do with some advice.
I have a 82 preamp with 2 hicaps and 2 180 power amps and, of course, the keilidhs. Its time to upgrade and I am thinking of going active for the first time. With about 1500GBP to spend, I am wondering what the experts would advise. Does looking for another hicap, 180 and a snaxo 3-6 second hand make sense? or is buying a Linn tunebox a better bet? I am tending towards the naim option because it gives more scope later if I replace the keilidhs. I am not sure if 3x180s would work with the keilidhs anyway? Maybe spending the money on better speakers and staying passive for a while makes more sense. Having not heard an active system based on an 82/180 combination and only seeing what others have written makes the choice difficult.
Thanks for any help anyone can give! I certainly appreciate it....
Best wishes,
Scott (newbie to the forum)

Keilidhs are two way, so you'd need a SNAXO2-4. And probably have to get the crossover frequencies tweaked a little.

I think this is one of those situations where you have to ask where you want to end up before trying to work out how to get there.

If you're convinced that you're a Naimie then I'd be looking at NAC52/Supercap/NAP250 which should be reachable with some careful secondhand trading.

Assuming, of course, you have blameless yet undisclosed sources.

Hi Paul,
I am convinced I'm a Naimie. Have been for 15 years. I love the sound I get but always looking for continuous improvement! I did have a 72 preamp and upgraded to an 82. What a difference. I am looking for something like that step change with my next move up.
Current setup is:
Meridian 500 CD transport
Meridian 563 DAC
Naim 82 with 2 hicaps
2xNAP180s
Flatcap + headline
Linn Keilidhs

Probably need to do soemthing with source at some stage. I also looking to add a NAT01 or NAT02.

I really don't know if its worth going active yet. Maybe replace the Linns with Allaes and the 180s with 250s and keep an eye out for a s/h supercap......it never ends!
Cheers Scott.

Scott,

To add my tuppence worth, I'm with Paul on the source. Why not try a CDX2, you may be pleasantly surprised by what it adds to your system. If you are a 'naimie' then it is probably the first step.
