Secondhand SBL's + AV setup

Posted by: Stuart M on 22 October 2002

Finally bit the bullet and going to upgrade from IBL's to SBL's. Question for you folks, when looking at SBL’s apart from having boxes and latest drivers what should I be looking for ? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

The grand plan is to have the SBL's as main speakers and use the IBL(s) as a centre for an AV setup. Initially driving 1 IBL from the Yamaha DSP-E800, and when I upgrade the power amp to a 250 or 300) I’d like to use centre output from the DSP-E800 to drive a NAP140 and then use the pair of IBL's as a combined centre speaker. But can the Yamaha drive a Naim power amp!

Next step for rear more IBL’s + second NAP 140 and/or new centre speaker (but think the IBL’s will win with the midrange)

Then AV2

Then back to how much is a CDS? again!

A couple of other things to look besides the latest drivers would be get anything but black...unless it's really your thing i.e. your a goth or you were molested my popsicle sticks as a child and can't stand the look of wood veneers i.e. cherry walnut, rosewood etc.
Then check out how they veneer the boxes, my somewhat vague understanding is that naim changed their cabinet makers a few years back, the newer SBL's are fully veneered whilst previous older versions were not(do a search on the forum I've seen it mentioned previously in somewhat more detail)..this new veneer has been said to make a subtle improvement in sound.
Mine were bought new from Naim..like about 4-5 months ago so I've only seen the latest one's before they were replaced.
Happy hunting.
