Converting Nait II to pre-amp

Posted by: JYOW on 01 April 2002

I know, this question has probably been ask many times before.

How does one copnvert a Nait II into a preamp? Are there instructions online on how to do that.

I am thinking about getting a NAP140 and using a Nait II as a preamp.

Any opinions on that?

I am unsure about the Nait 2, but it is a simple process your dealer can do for the Nait 3, I would either get in touch with them, or wait and see if anyone here knows any more than me...which is likely smile

keep your Nait II whole. It's not so flash as a preamp, and a 140 will quickly show this up. Look for a 62/140 32.5/140 or 72/140 combo - and keep the Nait II for a rainy day, or better still, move it on to another loving home.

When I first got into Naim I moved from a Nait 1 to a Nait 2, then converted the Nait 2 to pre-amp only, and added a nap 90 (shoebox sized case--wonderful). It was huge improvement.

Since then, however, having owned two or three nait 2's, I'm of the opinion that the amplifier in the Nait 2 is rather more accomplished than the pre-amp is.

Had I had it to do over again, and were I again in possession of a Nait 2 and wanted an upgrade, I would convert it to be used as a power amp with a nac 72.

This would work, of course, only if you are not in need of any more power.

This is just a hunch I have-- I could be wrong. I've never tried it. But, my gut is that this will offer more bang for the buck (particularly with the really low prices for Nac 72's these days) than converting to a pre-amp. This is particularly true if you had a hicap and listened to Lp's (the phono boards in the 72 being MUCH better than the MM sections built into the Nait 2.

(In fact, I think with just a dash of tinkering, one could add a hicap to a Nait 2 (I understand this is possible with a nait 3, no?--who has done this?) while keeping the amp and pre-amp sections standard. Wonder what this would sound like).

Anyway, all of these options seem to me to be far more interesting that adding a bigger amplifier to the Nait 2.

In any event, if anybody does this, I'd be curious as to the results.

Whatever you decide, the Nait 2 to pre-amp conversion is easily reversible--and has no untoward effects on the Nait 2.

Thanks all for you insight.

Yes I do need more power to drive my Celestion A1 and Harbeth LS3/5a, both require a bit of power.

I am trying to buy a NAP140 amp and thinking of using the mod Nait II as a stop gap solution, until I find a decent used Naim preamp to pair with the 140.

If I were to do this, are there diagrams/instructions on the web on how to do this?

Thanks
John

When I inquired Naim sold a ~10 GBP kit (with diagram I think) to do this in places where no dealer is available. But in most other places you just contact a Naim dealer who shouldn't charge too much.

Unfortunately Naim has stopped their dealer representation both in the two cities that I live in - Hong Kong and Tokyo. No idea why but they did that quite recently.
