Tonearme: Do you know what this is?

Posted by: Guido on 04 June 2001

Hello erverybody!

Thank's again for all the advice I got for turntable shopping - I'm a happy lp12 owner now.
The deck I got: lp12, ser.no.: 032562 (ebay GBP 290), Ittok LV II (loot GBP 175), K 18 (loot GBP 65), Valhalla (audiomarkt GBP 45).
The deck comes with a tonearm mounted - as it has not yet arrived I only got pictures, but perhaps you can help: Have you ever seen this arm? Is it any good? Has it any worth? Am I rich now?
??????
Thank You
Best wishes

P.S: Is it difficult to mount the Ittok? Is there any advice in the net how to setup deck, arm and cartridge?

perhaps a 2nd picture helps....

Guido,
I don't know what the arm is but this deck is all original. Be satisfied to trade the arm for a "Nirvana" update which includes new springs, hardware, P-clip, etc., and a new armboard(pre-drilled for Ittock).

P.S.
Pay the premium and have the deck set up expertly.

Hello Guido,

The arm is a Transcriptors and came factory fitted to the Transcriptors Reference Turntables that were produced from 1960 to 1972. It is a unipivot design.

From the pictures that you have posted it appears that the headshell may be missing. This is a proprietary type and may be very hard to find.

If necessary you could try contacting Transcriptors UK at uk-sales@transcriptors.co.uk for more information.

Hope this helps,

Craig

If you replace the missing headshell, I bet the tonearms's worth at least a hundred bucks to a Kubrick/Orange nut. eek

I found this interesting post on another forum;

quote:
Dear All
My father (David Gammon) founded Transcriptors
in 1960. He designed the Reference, Hydraulic
Reference, Saturn, Skeleton, Round, Transcriber
turntables. The Transcriptors Hydraulic
Reference was used by Stanley Kubrick in his
1971 film ' A ClockWork Orange ', not a Michell
Reference.He also supplied the Hydraulic
Reference to 'SME' in kit form which was fitted
with their '3009' tonearm. Kubrick came to my
father's factory at 2 Theobald
Street,Borehamwood, Herts (now the premises of
Michell) . My father gave Kubrick the table for
free. In 1972 my father issued Michell with a
license to manufacture the Reference under the
Michell logo. Michell has never designed any of
the Transcriptor turntables, nor was he a
director of the company. The only evolvment
Michell has had with Transcriptors was to
manufacture components under contract from
Transcriptors. Michell has copied my father
designs e.g The Focus One. My father also
designed the electronics for the 'Electronic
Reference', but this was never manufactured as
the company was moved to Ireland.
In 1971 my father was awarded a design award by
the 'Design Council,London' which was presented
to him by H.R.H Princess Margaret, and has also
recieved other design awards from around the
world.
All his turntables have sold in their
thousands, and contary to belief they were not
failures !.
I have reformed my fathers company to supply
spares/repairs/servicing and restoration.
My father worked for over thirty years
manufacturing turntables only to have Michell
try and muscle in on his work and claim the
glory. Well for once and for all it is going to
stop. If you want to find out more infomation,
then i suggest you visit our web site which is
atwww.transcriptors.co.uk and find out the
full story !.
My father is alive and well so is my mother,
and they will quite glady back up the
information, even in court!.

... luckily the deck is complete - the missing headshell I'll try to get from the guys at transcriptor. On their webpage they offer all kind of supplies for their gear - hopefully the headshell is still in stock.
Maybe I should open a clockwerk - kubrick exhibition - small in the beginning but perhaps I can gather more memorabilia...
Beethoven's 9th I already got (or was it the 3rd?)
If I get a headshell and if the linn specialist who will hopefully setup my deck (talked to my dealer, he used to work for them - "the" lp12 specialist in munich they said) is able to setup the transcriptor I could give it a try....
Thanks very much for the info
Best wishes

Hello Guido,

I have a xerox copy of a German language setup manual for the LP12, 26 pages A4, dating back to 1983. I can make you copy if you want.

For mounting the Ittok on the LP12, you need the mounting template which you find in the original box of the Ittok. It is also suitable to make a tonearm board yourself. If you buy a ready tonearm board from Linn, you need just a standard overhang template.

regards,
Hartmut from Munich, who sold his mint condition 1989 Valhalla'd LP12 for 800DM last year - and his ARO for 480UKP to a guy on the forum which had a mishap with his wall mounted LP12 lately.

I use to have a Transcriptors tone arm on one of their Saturn turntables. It was the Vestigial arm and it was very different from more traditional designs. It had a hinged headshell, and rotating counterweight to balance it. You have to see it to believe it!

I had thought that it would play some of my extremely warped records, but was not really so impressed with the sound. I prefered the Grace 747 and then my Ittok.

There are a few pictures of it on their web site at Transcriptors web page. Press "enter site", "Turntable Gallery", then "Skeleton" (not Saturn). The arm is in most of the pictures, but the best shots are near the bottom.

Despite what I thought about the sound from the tonearm, it gives me a kick to look at the pictures, and I think the turntables still look better than my LP12.

Please listen to your tonearm and let us know what you think about it. It could be very good.

Simon
