I just picked up "Perfect Takes". It has 10 Blue Note tunes remastered by RvG. They are not famous tunes and I hadn't heard them before. However they are the best recorded jazz I have heard (No I haven't A-Bed it against my other music). My briks have never boogied so hard!

I know we are prone to superlatives on this forum but this cd is very, very good.

Now it turns out that there is a quite a series, RvG at Blue Note. Are these all as well recorded? I heard good reports about the RVG remaster of "A Love Supreme" in another thread.

cheers

I did, thanks Ian.

Gonna have fun sourcing the vinyls from Perth.

In Australia we mostly get the European CD pressings, the perfect takes CD sounds really good, even on this "inferior" pressing. It also contains a DVDrom with a half hour interview with RVG

Seriously though, where would you get Japanese pressings from? Amazon.jp?

I had a quick look at amazon.co.jp but all their jazz (that I looked at) seems to be impoted from the US.

Having just got back from Japan a couple of weeks ago, I would say that, since you're in Australia anyway, flying to Tokyo and spending a few days hunting through record shops would get you all the 70s Japanese pressings you could want, and it would still cost less than mail order :-) Plus, it's an excellent city in all other respects.

Perth to Tokyo is like London to Joh'burg, not real close. However there is a small chance I'll be passing through later this year. I hadn't planned to stop there seeing it's expensive reputation but perhaps it is not shuch a bad thing.

Is it easy to get around there? I don't speak or read Japanese.

If you get the chance to go, it's really worth it. The mail order places who sell outside of Japan put a huge markup on the prices. Great jazz (and other) LPs are unbelievably plentiful, generally mint condition, and extremely cheap. Just wandering around half a dozen branches of Disk Union you'll spot all kinds of insanely rare and great things for not much money.

As for language, I only have about 6 words of Japanese and managed to cope for a month :-)

Ian, I'll see what funds allow later this year.

Listened to Open Sesame with Freddie Hubbard and Tina Brooks last night, great stuff. I can see a new jazz phase coming up.
