What Next?

Posted by: Alex S. on 27 April 2001

Its taken 25 yrs but I now have:

Main system

CDX with a CDPS
LP12, Lingo, Dynavector DV20-X
82 with 2 old Hi-Caps
2 X old style 250s
All sitting on Base 01s
Niam cabling apart from - Chord interconnect to CDX & Cabletalk 4.1 speaker cable
B&W Nautilus 805s on granite stands
(Most of the above 2nd hand but serviced)

2nd system

32.5/110 with Toshiba DVD and AE1mark 1s + various AV rubbish

What Should I do Next?

Nothing? XPS? Supercap? Take one Hi-Cap out of system 1 and put in system 2? Retire whilst waiting for Naim DVD-A?

Advice & comments please

Alex

To my mind its easy

1. Sell off 2 old Hicaps

2. Buy new supercap...very few s/hand ones around.

3. Flog 82

4. Buy 52

Thats not too bad a system.

Regards

Mick

Alex,

The question is what do you want to do next?

You have a well balanced system that should sound great, but are you happy with it.

AndyR has given some very good advice, enjoy your system and buy more music.

I love my system - but then I loved the old one too, and that little upgrade bug still bites every 10 years or so and then leaves me skint another decade.

The LP12 has the humble Ittok but I don't want to upgrade the turntable for now.

I listen to system 1 at work which is:
good because I can go loud
bad because its a large concrete box which I cant change much

The better my system gets the less a bad listening room seems to matter!

It all sits on old Sound Org tables/racks with a Base platform under each piece of kit

What are the views on CDPS vs XPS

Is a Supercap that much better than 2 Hi-caps for an 82?

Cant afford 52

Does anyone recommend alternative speaker cable - I'm not entirely convinced by NACA 5 or CT 4.1 - I don't want to spend £300 pm.

Thanks Alex

Thanks Ken - I suspected as much

Everyone

Since my last visit I've read more topics and donned anorak substitute so here goes:

Please choose where to place my equipment.

Choices:
Single old Sound Org Table
5 Tier old Sound Org Rack
Floor

All sitting on Base

Until 10 minutes ago it went thus:
Top shelf of 5 tier, CDX; shelf 2, 82; 3, CDPS; 4, 250; 5,250; Floor (on Base01 on MDF shelf from hideous dismantled TV cabinet) 2 HCs
Single SO table: LP12

I've just swapped the CDX with the LP12 and I'm either going mad or it sounds a bit tighter; (don't dare listen to Sondek).

I'm taking the rest of the week off!

Thanks A.

Thanks James - I'm hearing all the things I don't want to hear - I think I'll pass on the 135 dem until I've got more money!

I thought I had written semi-gibberish. . .What I hoped to say was that the CDX sounded tighter on a single Sound Org table than it did on the top of a 5 tier unit.

The LP12 is recently serviced but is only up to Valhalla spec and probably needs a new motor. .
and I wish I still had my old Troika.
