Price Of A Pint
Posted by: Shayman on 17 August 2005
As a regular visitor at 'the pub' over the last 16 years I (and many others) have complained regularly at the increases in beer prices and well remember backing CAMRAs campaigns such as the one against the £2 pint several years back.
However having been to Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Spain with work recently I've started realising how cheap social drinking is in this country.
When you consider a pint is 568ml and most European bars will serve 500ml maximum it almost makes me feel lucky to be paying 2.40ish for a pint here. I'm off for a quick one now to celebrate, anyone fancy it?

But have you seen how cheap their (generally very good) beer is in supermarkets in Germany?

Wetherspoons are still typically well under £2 a pint, there must be a couple of them in Luton.

We have returned from trips to Poland 80p for 500cc draft Zyviec and Corfu € 2-3(£1.50-2.00) for 500cc draft Mythos.I am not normally a lager drinker but the high temps seems to demand it.

In France you won't get a 50cl beer for less than €4. Typically it's €5.50 in provincial town centres and as much as €8 in Paris!
In Germany the same size beer will be about €2.40 in a locals' pub, €3 in small towns, and between €3.5 and €4 in the bigger cities like Frankfurt.
In the UK it's a North/South or Wetherspoons thing. However, the most expensive pint I bought recently was £2.99 for a pint of Kronenbourg at Wetherspoons in Stansted Airport. At my local I paid £5.10 last night for a pint of Kronenbourg and a pint of Guinness.
I guess Spain is probably cheapest in Western Europe, although in Barcelona you are looking at paying between €4 and €5.
The cheapest in the whole of Europe is probably Slovakia but it's not a safe place to go for a beer as racism over there is directed towards anyone who isn't Slovak. For about 40p you'll get a 50cl beer and your head kicked in.

The two locals here are £2.40 a pint of Courage Best or Ringwood.
A bloody rip off.

Local club I frequent of a Friday to partake in an pint and a frame, or three, of snooker charges £1.62 for a pint of a good draught 60/- Ale.
Totally reasonable and in the spirit of relaxation and entertainment !

But conversion of £2.40 to a European 50cl in = 3 Euros exactly ((2.4/568)*500 *1.42). You ain't going to find that many places in Western Europe (especially anywhere with even a hint of ambience)....which is my initial point.

PS Luton has 1 Wetherspoons and its actually rather a nice one surprisingly. Especially in the bizarrely designed circular bar bit at the far end from the cinema. Bitter is about 1.80 to 2 pounds on average

I'm buying the imorted British bottled stuff from the supermarkets at around two squid and enjoying the best ambience going. In front of my kit.
No drunks, no smokers, no hooray henries, no chavs, no beggars, no one arm bandits, no jukebox, no mobile phones, no Morris Dancers, no permed twirlies, no TV, no joggled tables, no skittles and no bløødy snooker. A nice Finnish designer glass at my choice of temperature and my choice of music as loud as I want it.

Remember that when you buy a pint in this country, nealy a pound is paid in VAT and duty.
This makes a pint in your local good value!
Wetherspoons buy beer in rediculously cheap and therefore make more margin than most! I sell my beer in Firkins (72 pints) to landlords at a reasonable/market price of £50ex VAT. They would want to pay £37 or less!
I take my own produce home and enjoy much the same ambience as you Nime.
