Assigning genres on HDX
Posted by: David Leedham on 24 January 2009
I can create new categories of genre,eg Trip hop on the desktop client. However I cannot reassign the category to an artist via said client.
Via the url site and flash I can via my laptop reassign genres 70% of the time, the rest of the time the naim logo comes up and states "loading" then reverts to the system screen. This seems to happen randomly whether done through artist or album selection.
Anybody having same problem?
Reaaly enjoying random play today now have480 albums ripped.

True, you cannot assign genres in the DTC, but only rename album/artist. Why this was left out in the software is unknown and hopefully is corrected in the next version.
I haven't had this issue with assigning genres in the IPUI.I use the following algorithm: Assign genres--> view artists-->select artist-->choose album-->select genre-->finalize

Time to contact Naim.

Not entirely sure what the issue is here. I have just re-assigned an album from "rock" to "crap" on my unit...
Make sure you create new genres and assign them in the "Global" music area, not Local server (assuming that you have shares/NAS's attached).
The player already knows that the music you are assigning a genre to, is on the player and thus it will then appear in the Local Server "Genre" section.
as for Munch's comments...

Do you mean using the desktop client on my pc when referring to the “Global music area”?
“not Local server “ meaning via touch panel and or web browser?
“assuming that you have shares/NAS's attached” lost me on this one as well I`m afraid.
Some of the terminology is making the understanding rather difficult. The glossary in the HDX manual does not include the above terms.
I do not know how to translate this into any other language, as I said:

Not critical issues here but a niggle nonetheless.

On my HDX I can assign genres through album selection only, not via artist selection, even though this is an available option through assign genre window. It is possible to check off every album by an artist and group re assign them. Long way round but job done now.

I am only refering to the DTC.
When using the front panel GUI, assigning genres via Artist->Album is actually no different from doing it via DTC, it just seems that way as it uses a different interface. You can also do the same from the Web Interface (what Gary calls the IPUI)
A note on global/local views:
In DTC, the left panel of the "Music Library" section usually shows the below if you don't have any external music sources attached (i.e. not connected to network/no USB devices attached):
+Artist
+Albums
+People
+Genres
+Playlist
+My Naim Music Server
This effectivly is the "global" view in this situation, as no other shares or music sources are available, so the player itself IS the global entity.
Ok, so now, if you have external shares/USB sources, you tend to see:
+Artist
+Albums
+People
+Genres
+Playlist
+My Naim Music Server
+Local Server Music
+Some share
+another share
+etc
So given the latter list (i.e with shares/USB devices), the "global" music lists are the ones shown as Artist, Album, People, Genres, Playlist. These should contain any albums/artist etc on your network and on the player itself - thus global.
Now, if you click on the + on the Local Server Music section, this now also shows Album, Artist etc again, but you will note after inspection that this only shows music natively on the player itself - thus local.
Assign Artist's album to a genre:
(In this case I'm doing it from Local Server Music, but the same could be done from global section)
-click + on Artists
-highlight artist of choice (artist's albums now appear on right side of DTC window)
-scroll down and click on the + next to Genres (now you see Genre list in left pane)
-highlight and drag the album of choice from the right pane, in to the relevant Genre on the left.
It should auto update, if not hit F5 to refresh the view.

Alan, nice that will get the job done, but unfortunately the manual is none too clear about actually using the software. One of my comments about the software is that it is not intuitive and thus not having a more complete instruction manual leads to thee types of issues. In fact I was given different instructions by Naim technical support for assigning genres by creating them in the DTC and then assigning them through the IPUI. It would seem easier to be able to just click on the genre on the right side of the window and just change it and update as you do for changing album or artist name.
Obviously other concerns need to or have already been ironed out.
Comments aside I still think that the first released software version is pretty easy to use and looks great. I know Naim will work to get it "bit perfect."
