I you're using a Mac then use Mac The Ripper for the Initial Rip and Handbrake to encode to a format for iPad.

Mac the ripper is a bit old school, rippit will rip and compress in one application.
So to will mac DVDripper pro.
Both are more up to date and reguarly updated for new codes in DVDs.

And what about for Windows?
I'm sure my son would love to be able to rip DVDs for his iPod Touch.
Thanks
Gavin

garyi... I think Handbrake will compress better than most alternatives so would stick with the two stage process.
Gavin B... For Windows - DVD Decrypter and then Handbrake
If you have a lot of DVDs you want to encode to MP4 for your iPad / iPod then may be worth investing in an Elgato Turbo.264 HD.

My one attempt at this convinced me that the easiest way to rip a DVD you own is probably to download it from the internet. It's just so time consuming!
