Off to Gothenburg in Sept - any suggestions...

...re sights to see. We usually do a day trip - take in some sights sounds and smells, to a eurpoean city (and we've done Berlin to death*) - have some eats then fly back.
Any suggestions from folk who have visited this city - my folks have been and they loved it.

I don't know about Göteborg, Andy, but if you're going to take the trouble to holiday in Sverige, then FWIW I cannot recommend Stockholm highly enough...it is beautiful.
A bit of a distance from Gothenburg though, I will admit.

Don't take your wife. After London, Paris and Rome you will find Gothenburg has the best fashion shopping in Europe.
There are some wonderful canals there and open air pubs and restuarants. I agree with JonR Stockholm is beautiful but you will find alot of surprises in Gothenburg too.

I went through the place once on the way to Norway, and took the old car back through the Volvo Torslander factory complex where she was made. Not of any interest I am sure, but apart from buying petrol there I did not stop long enough to sample the delights of the place!
There is an absolutely splendid orchestra there, so maybe you could fit in a good concert?

Yup, been to Göteborg before and enjoyed it. There's a very good art exhibtion/museum at the end of the main street in town that's worth a visit. Lots of nice parks, some good bars/cafes (Harleys is worth a special mention). If you like seafood, we went to a place called the 'Fish Church' which is located along the canal (can't remember where exactly). It's basically fish market on the lower levels with a restaurant at the top. Everything there was superb, especially the prawns/crayfish. Getting around is easy as public transport is superb. Bus/trams and boats are all covered by the equivelant of a London Travel Pass so head out to the islands for some sun-bathing and cool sea swimming!
Take a boat tour as well, as this will take you around the city and through the main harbour. Great view of the 'Lipstick' building from there.
A visit to Liseberg is also a good day out. Sort of like Alton Towers but without the massive crowds.
And like Fredrik, a visit to the Volvo plant/museum at Malmö is an interesting few hours assuming you like their products.
If I think of anything else, I'll post it!
Cheers/Takk!

I visited during November(company paid for business trip) and although some attractions and visits had closed for the season it was a good trip. I was also nut numbingly cold so try and visit during the summer.

I liked it. Just wandered about really.

The fresh shrimps are worth looking out for in the market, or, I guess, on a decent restaurant's menu.
Seem to recall that Hasselblad (cameras) have a gallery showing photographs taken using their cameras. Nice if you like that sort of thing.

For a moment I thought that was Rothenburg, Germany.

My girlfriend & I visited Gothenburg a couple of years ago. She thought it was hilarious taking a picture of me outside the Pantbank. She was less impressed when I took a picture of her outside a shop called Cum.

I live in Gothenburg and have some recommendations: Nefertiti (www.nefertiti.se) for jazz. Food, as mentioned feskekörka (the fish church) but there are a lot of good restaurants if you are willing to pay for good food, sjömagasinet (http://www.sjomagasinet.se) would be one of them. The Rover on 2:a långgatan is a good place to have a beer. 2:a långgatan is a bit like the red light district of gothenburg, based on the amount of strip-clubs there, but there are also a good place for buying some records; new at blenda (www.blenda.nu) or second hand at "Andra långgatans skivhandel".
Other places to visit would be Konstmuseet (the art museum) or Röda Sten (a bit more modern art) by the seaside.
The best cup of coffee you can find at Centro on Kyrkogatan or the old school oven-roasted coffee at Mauritz at Fredsgatan a rågbulle (rye bun) is quite good.
For shopping I would recommend Vallgatan, and close to the end of Vallgatan, you can go through Viktoriapassagen, its basically a tunnel. At viktoriapassagen you can find good coffee (Da Matteo) and Pasta (Pasta e panini) and chocolate (Flickorna Kanold, Södra Larmgatan). Södra larmgatan is on the other side of Viktoriapassagen and is also a good street for some shopping. For quick shopping just go to NK.
Världskulturmuseet
(http://www.varldskulturmuseet.se) The Museum of World Culture is well worth a visit.
Paddan
A boat trip in the canal of gothenburg I would recommend, every tourist do this but it is good if the weather is on your side.
Universeum
A animal and technical museum, great if you have children but quite good anyway if you like animals.
Liseberg
An amusement park, a must if you have children, otherwise OK.
There is a lot of information on http://www.goteborg.com for a good stay, I guess. You can also drop me a msg. Have a great stay!
Kind regards, Jerry
