Help

Well I finally got to hear and see one thats a DVD5. I have to say picture was very good, it was run through the DVI output to a sim2 projector. The sound was very detailed although no sub was being used. It really felt like it had cinematic ability. The shop have put a deal on the table for me to get one. So I am going to arrange a home demo some time soon. Never had a chance to hear on two channel with CD.

I do however need the forums help on another matter, I have never liked subs and really don't know much about them but have decided to add one to the system. The current system being Snell speakers front/centre, Linns on rear, Av2, Bryston five channel power amp and Meridian DVD player.

Should I go for the Naim sub, B&W whose speakers I have liked for some time, Velodyne or a Rel the budget is about a £1000, can't push it much more than that. So if you could help me with any makes models or suggetions there's an easter egg in it for ya

Ps tried the Velodyne SPL800 and it sounded lost and didn't seem to add much to the system

Most of the B&W subs don't have high level conections so you'd have to find a way to drive one with low level phono connections if you want to use it in a Naim stereo system. Special cable from a HiCap possibly? Does the DVD5 have a "sub-out" socket?

An HT system without a subwoofer is like an HT system without a screen. Neither option makes much sense. Smile

Neil,

This is a complex question.

I sympathise as the only place to properly dem these things is in your own system - but is a pain due to their weight, the need to properly interface them with your current speakers, and determine how they interact with your room.

Apart from this forum and PFM take a look at:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php

This is an av site that has a specialist subwoofer section that makes interesting reading.

I think that a primary decision you need to make is whether the sub is purely for cinema, or if you might us it as a part of your hi-fi.

There are a number subs that would probably be ruled out for music use, but are reporatedly great for av.

Personally I ended up buying a 2nd hand REL Strata III for 400 pounds - on the basis that I had used a Q series for a couple of years (fine for cinema - not music) and knew I could unload the Strata if I didn't like it, which was not the case.

This might be a route for you?

Hope the link helps.
