difference between good and "bad" DVD player

Posted by: Jonathan on 07 January 2004

I bought my DVD player some time ago - 2 or 3 years ago - STG 650. Recently there seem to be many new players at what seem amazing low prices - 50 quid for a component output, multi region player. Amazing. Could anyone give me a lowdown on what the key differences are between these budget players and the new higher end models (eg Naim DVD5) in terms of pic quality etc.

Thanks

Jonathan,

I have a small TV and the picture quality seems pretty similar on the 3 dvd players I have owned.

The first was an expensive Philips. Its main advantage was having a circular jog button similar to those found on professional VTRs.

After that I had two cheap players a Shinco and a magnavox (US Philips). Sound and video quality seem similar but they play every disk I have put in them, unlike the earlier model.

All are still working fine. I used the same decoder in my Yamaha multi channel amp for all audio decoding.

A mate also bought a cheap DVD recently, it can't switch between NTSC and PAL and all the NTSC movies seem a bit jerky in their motion.

Being able to play dodgy disks is a big advantage as many rental movies are badly scratched.

cheers
Gus
