They could always put it on 78!

I have always heard that an album will sound sonically superior in 45rpm than 33 1/3rpms. I have seen many LPs from Acoustic Sounds and Music Direct in 45 rpm versions that promise better sound than the '33 versions.
Have any of you tried 45rpm albums? Better yet, have any of you compared them to the regular LPs?

I have Creedence Clearwater Revival's Green River as 45 r.p.m album, but it does not have all of the tracks that are on the 33. I think it sounds better on 45 r.p.m, but I may deluding myself.

Levinson used to cut his records at 45 rpm, as do several hi-end labels. But single-sided? That's a bit nuts. After hearing what Naim can do with 180g vinyl at 33.3, I think that's quite sufficient to capture the Zep. OK- go for double-sided on 200g vinyl at 45 if you want to have something "deluxe", but...

Clearly aimed at fad suckers only, in my view.

IC records used to release albums on 45rpm. I have some Klaus Schulze that is at 45 and the same record on a different label at 33. It's difficult to be sure if they sound better. Logic says they should. I get the feeling they're slightly louder but I'm not sure if that's because of the speed or the pressing or what

Unless they EQ in mastering, there's less bass.

Yes, I have many of both Classic Records and Analogue Productions labels at 45rpm and they are much better than the 33 release just as 45rpm 12" singles of the 1980's were much better than the lp equivalent. It's probably not possible to find better sounding reissues. They are worth it if you have a particular interest in the music - many of the releases are classic jazz performances that are very difficult to find as originals at reasonable prices.

That's true but I have a lot of 12" singles that are at 33 as well as those that are at 45. It seems to me that the 45s sound much the same as the 33s and in fact the 33s sound better than the lp equivalent. It is however difficult to find a single that is the same mix as the album version. I know that quite a few singles have an album version on the B side but I'm pretty sure that most of them have been altered in some way

I originally asked about whether you have compared 45rpm releases to their 33 1/3 counterparts. A number of you have replied with your comments.
Thanks for the excellent information. It has been very useful.

I do have some 45 r.p.m singles that I have on 33 1/3 r.p.m elpees. In most cases I think the single sounds better. I wonder if it is really the case though, as the 45 often sounds a bit louder.
