***Box Position on Stand***

Posted by: shinpad on 12 November 2002

I have a 5 tier stand with preamp, cdp, hicap, xps and power amp on it. What is the best order to have them in????
Previously I have had them in the order listed above, but was wondering if I needed to change it around, and as I'm moving everything around at the moment now is a good a time as any to ask.
I realise that it may make no difference at all, but you never know........ big grin

Not exactly the same, but Dave Dever recommended to me:

CDS1 head
82
250
hi/hi
CDPS

Sounds good enoughthat I have no desire to experiment.

You need a spacer shelf between those "brain" and "brawn" components.

From top down:

1) CD player

2) Pre

3) Empty

4) Hi

5) Power

6) XPS

That should open out the higher frequencies nicely and rid your system of harshness.

If your rack isn't modular, you'll need another one or a wallshelf for your CD player. It'll be worth it.

Steve.

Steven makes agood point. My prized LP12 is on a wall shelf about as far away from the power as possible. And if I had different space and racks, I'd separate the power further away from the pre and CDP.

Also, note that Steven assumes one hicap. I suspect I'd have a single hi above the amp, too, but I'm lucky enough to have 2. Apparently a big PSU (s'cap, CDPS, XPS) is dirtier than a 250.

I have heard that with mana stands, lower you put the CD spinner and pre amp the better.

That surprises me. JW's CDS and pre are at the top, iirc. Marco has two Mana racks, both with Reference Tops housing his CDS2 and 52 pre repectively.

I take it then that Mana do Reference Bottoms for folks who prefer their source components lower down. big grin
