My money is on Johnny Herbert, his physique is almost identical to the Stigs.

Well it used to be Perry McCarthy. Word is that now it's a number of folks including that Irish girl who's name I've forgotten

The Stig without his helmet or racing suit on.

The Stig
My friend, who is a London cabbie, met him last year and got talking to him about his exploits as 'The Stig'.
I don't know who the current one is, though.
Regards
Mark

You never see The Stig and Kendo Nagasaki in the same room do you?
Think about it!

Bound to be an unknown to the public test driver, rather than a race driver, the testers tend to be more consistant and faster lap for lap.
When they took a Le Mans winning D type Jaguar and turned the prop shaft into a barley sugar twist the other year, the driver was named in the splurge of bad publicity, it may have been the Perry Mc Carthy mentioned.
Don't know who the irish girl is (eddie irvine ???) but I'd like to see them give a regular slot to the blonde german lady, a neurembourgring test driver, who did an amazingly fast lap in a white panel van on one of last years shows

Tiff is on a rival channel Damon is above such things, Johny and Jason are a bit busy racing/managing else where and Eddie is probably being Eddie in all the top poser places.
Ben Collins is the top tip. IMHO
As a sidebar this is worth watching if you like "hairy" drives,Micheal Vergers in a Radical.

Sure I am being dim, but why is he/she known as "Stig"?
Posted on: 07 February 2007 by arf005
Great to see the show back, and with Hamster too....the flick where they re-surfaced that minor road was hilarious!
My gorgeous other half was asking about Gambon corner - anyone found a link to his (infamous) lap where the penultimate corner got its name...??
Cheers,
Ali

Must be some reference to the kids book, Stig Of The Dump - maybe one of Clarkson's relatives wrote it.

Micheal Gambon made right "dogs dinner" of that corner and it was re-named to "honour" the incident. MG nearly took out the Top Gear crew if memory serves.
Re: Stig, it could be a tribute to Stig Blomquist rally/race driver extrodinere.

Howard - sorry, I maybe should have explained myself better....
I have seen the infamous episode - it was hilarious!! Not only did Gambon nearly take out the film crew he also broke the car! Lost a wheel - which made it round the corner faster than he did....
I was just curous if anyone was able to locate a clip of the incident so I could show it to me other half.....
Cheers,
Ali

I thought it used to be Perry McCarthy but after he went public that he was 'The Stig' (you can book him as an after dinner speaker) Top Gear changed drivers. No idea who the new one is.

arf005 my fault! I read but did not comprehend. You were quite clear in your post.

No worries Howard.
Thanks for that Bob, just watched the clip - was it in that last series, when we was practicing before doing the flying lap you see in the clip, that he broke the car or am I thinking about someone else....I thought he broke a wheel off....???

Yes that's her, great stuff. I wouldn't surprise me if after last sunday's Top Gear school boy antics in southern USA ( dead cows & irate red necks) Clarkson & Co were dumped and Frau Schmitz and a couple of her chums were given a shot at the programme.
