Obama The New President

Oh My Matilda.
I think sadly that he will be assassinated within 6 months and by An African American and not a white supremacist.
Why this opinion.
Simple.
He is NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN.
But is mixed race.
Speaking to many people today at work there is a general consensus that he stands a good chance of being assassinated.
As he is mixed race, father Kenyan mother European, and was brought up by his maternal grandmother i believe many will feel that he is more European than African.
He has also achieved many European Values such as Education wealth success using the European work ethic and value systems.
Compare him to the average African American and consider what will happen after the Honeymoon period of his administration wears off.
I believe many will be disaffected and will pick on his Mixed Race and unfortunately will act .
Be interesting to see if any of this post and supposition materialises.
I hope not.

What a bunch of miserable bastards.
Now hold on - fireworks night? Brilliant! The best thing about having Nov 5th on a Wednesday is that there are displays on both the preceding and following weekends. Can't get enough!
Now Christmas....don't get me started

I can't believe in a country that size they can't find a decent candidate for president. I can only surmise that talented people have got better things to do. Obama, McCain, Palin, Biden... it'd be funny if it wasn't true.
If you have a sausage machine, you make sausages. The political process is a very long hard road, so the products of that process have many common attributes, especially in this day and age where money rules the whole thing (how much did they spend on the campaigns???).
Apparently, the trend has been that presidents elected during times of trouble and strife have come out very well. Here's hoping that it's true with Obama. I am more concerned what Obama's policies mean for the rest of the world, and I am not sure it's all good news. That said, I prefer him to McCain/Palin any day of the week, particularly Palin. At first I thought her choice was a master stroke, but very quickly changed my mind. I'm sure McCain lost because of her.

Dear Daveohorn,
While I have no wish to have an argument with you, I really don't understand on what basis you've made your initial post apart from expressing some kind of weird fear of yours.
While I think there are issues of race in every nation, which is so pathetic, its great to see the US vote for change in such a positve and direct way.
regards
Dev
ps, I also noticed in your original post you didn't spell his name correctly. Its not that hard, doesn't have too many letters in it. Suggest you put the glasses on and turn the hearing aid up next time

Not since the penning of the declaration of independence, has there been a political moment of simlar significance in the United
States of America.
Cynicism does not demonstrate some profound understanding of the big picture. It merely demonstrates an inability to look in the mirror and see what could be, rather than what isn't there.
It is time to overcome oneself.

Anyone noticed that someone is absent?
After all the effort over the past year, he's nowhere to be found - maybe too much celebrating. Maybe we need to send out a search party for him.
Fred! Where the hell are you?

Was there an election - must have missed that? Don't suppose I'll notice any difference. BTW what is he president of? Should I care or just hang another Roger Dean poster on my wall - not sure politics is still relevant in the modern world.

Obama's father was African, his mother American. In my book, that makes him as African-American as one can get.
Ultimately, though, whether or not he "qualifies" for that label is probably a decision for the African-American community, and they seem to have decided "yes".
Would that it didn't matter so much to some.

I agree 100%.
When I remember the 1950's and 60's racism, segregated schooling and transport, segregated hotels, the intimidation, beatings and murders which were commonplace across the southern states, I marvel that the USA has come so far, so quickly. All credit to them.
The race issue is till alive in other lands. I will be very happy when we see the election of black heads of government or of state in for example, Australia, Spain and some of the Eastern European countries. And even (dare I say it) in the UK.
I am confident that Obama will do all he can for his country and for the world but there will inevitably be those who want him to fail. Even in this forum, I'm afraid. IMHO he was a great candidate and he will be a great president.
Regards,
Ken

DEar All,
One of his first challenegs may be :
The completion of the deportation back to Kenya of his Aunt. Apparently she has overstayed her deportation order by four years.
So lets see if he is able to reconcile the deportation of illegal immigrants when they are African and family.
This single problem may define his presidency.
I hope that the future of the USofA is bright under Obama as we all need the US to prosper in order for us to prosper.
Thanks NERO that was what i was trying to say.
If America was predominately Black and that the underclass was white would Obama be protrayed as the saviour of the European Americans as his mother is European and therefore he is a European American.
This reflects the opposite of my original post.
It is sad that George W will be remembered for IRAQ and not for his positive achievements.
Many will sy there were no positive achievements, but there has been much said here in the press about what he did achieve. But his memorial will be wholly negative.
One other point made here wasa the obscene cost of Obama's presidential run.
Politicians universally should be limited in the costs that they can spend this way the richest wont be able to out spend the not so rich.
Politics universally has become too expensive.

David,
Based on your various posts in this thread, it seems to me that you live in another era, maybe 100+ years back.

The major success of this election is the massive turnout of African Americans who cheered on their boy.
A few thoughts. Firstly I'm not sure if the poll stats support that statement.
Secondly I seem to recall Clinton also mobilised great suport amongst black voters. He was white.
'Their boy' sounds pretty offensive to me. He got 52% of the popular vote. Lots of folk mixed up in that number!
Your comment that 'if you are not obviously European you are black regardless of your parentage' is frankly plain stupid. What about native americans, hispanic etc etc etc. America (and so many other nations) is a vast melting pot, and as time goes by almost every citizen may claim a rich variety of ethnic contributions through their familes. Hallelujah. Lets celebrate cultural diversity and not outmoded ethnic labelling.
I'm afraid i just don't get your point(s) at all.

Seems as if eveyone BUT Obama makes an issue of his being "black" or "African-American" or whatever.
To say his mother is "European" is interesting. How many generations do you have to be separated from a continent in order to assume the origins of your present locale?
This construct drives me nuts.
However, not so long ago in many parts of the US, if you had 1/32 "black in you" your were "black".
If you believe any of this research on the Human Genome Project then all these constructs of origin become less meaningful.

Eh...this money was raised through fundraising, so it was his suporters who donated it...it wasn't his personal wealth that funded it.quote:politicians universally should be limited in the costs that they can spend this way the richest wont be able to out spend the not so rich.

Daveohorn,
I fear you're digging yourself deeper into a hole. Really don't undertand the point you are trying to make but it sounds very odd I must say.
Sorry.

Mixed race, black, whatever. He's black because we refer to those of mixed race as black. Dunno why, it isn't factually correct, but that's what we say. It's what I say (white) and it's what he says (mixed race/black).
He's a black president, 'cos we're calling him black.
What's the problem?
I don't have a problem with it and he doesn't have a problem with it, and black people don't have a problem with it either. Generally, that is - there will always be pockets of people in each distinction that disagree, but on the whole.
Does it matter?
Anyway, I like that he's mixed race. It's like he represents both us black & whites.

Aside from his galvanizing enough people to decisively rebuke the right-wing neo-con agenda and choose a new president who represents a monumentally positive shift in the USA and the world, what are Bush's positive achievements? Name one ... or two, if you can.

Hear, hear!
That's what got us in all this trouble in the first place. We have plenty of our own problems here in the US.
Believe it or not, there are plenty of people in the US that AREN'T Joe six pack/rednecks. I think that's why Barack got elected. We're just as tired of the Cowboy rule as you are...
It's time for a thinking man to take the big chair, who cares what color his skin is?
We have to at least give this a go...
I'm hoping for the best.
And the socialism argument is pretty weak. The minute you pay taxes and the government uses it to do something you didn't want to do with it, like buy guns instead of build schools the line gets blurred.
